utter noob showing my age

i have recently bought new rasp pi 3 (with noobs and rasbian on sd) have booted the sd card and set up but am trying to put retro pi on it but there isnt the room on the sd card can i put the retro file image on a diffrent sd or is there a way to compress the sd. ard on the rasberry pi card to make room any help apprieciated sorry for noobing you all out cheers

If your intention is to run RetroPie exclusively on the Raspberry PI, then use the RetroPie image to start - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/. Writing the image will overwrite the cards' contents (Noobs and Raspbian), but you'll have a ready to use RetroPie installation, using the whole SD card size.

@mitu so if i was to get a seperate new sd card with just retro pie image on i just insert n should set up :$ rasbian isnt needed on the card cheers

you could just do it on your old card. writing an image overwrites EVERYTHING on the card. it shouldn't matter what is on there. you need to write the image to do the card itself, not any existing partitions

@dankcushions so i dont need the rasbian and noobs just rewrite with retro pie image and should all run from that ?

so litturally need the retro pie image nothing else and it will run

Yes, all you need to do is download the image file, extract it to reveal the image, write the image and plug it into the pi. Retropie will be ready to go. Retropie is built on the top of Raspbian. No need for any other cards, systems or stress.
