New Overlay: Q*bert
-
An unforgettable classic: Q*bert.
2 overlays created: 1080p and 1280x1024.
and Launching image too ;-)
Based on artwork from original arcade bezel and CPO.
Merry Xmas!!!
Qbert PS4 Christmas dynamic theme.
(I don't have a PS4 but it's a nice theme!)You can find this and more hand crafted quality overlays in the rpie-ovl repository.
And if you want an easy way to install them, @meleu created a great dedicated script.
Perform these commands on your RetroPie:cd git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/meleu/rpie-art cd rpie-art ./rpie-art.sh
After launching
rpie-art.sh
script you just have to follow the instructions in the dialog boxes. Once you have therpie-art.sh
script, choose the Update option to get all the latest art in the repository. -
Great work as usual man! Thanks!

Hi @UDb23 , I've created a couple of overlays - 1280 x 1024 only so far, and wanted to know whether you'd have an interest in including them in your repository. If so, let me know the best way of getting them in there.
Recent ones I've done include;
Aero Fighters
Dig Dug (quite different from the one you have in your repository)
Mr. Do
Esp Ra De
Guwange...and I think a couple of others too.
-
@andrewh Sure they could be added for people using that resolution. To be added to the repo and be installable with @meleu 's script an INI file for each overlay is required (just check the one provided with Q*bert in the repo as template).
To upload to the repo: either you have a github account and you create a pull request or you just provide me a link where to download your files and I'll add them to the repo. -
@UDb23 , That's great - I'll start working on that now. One or two questions, though -
- I have 5:4 overlays for some of the systems you've already done - I presume you'll need to add the details for my overlays into the ini files for those systems?
- For fields such as launching_image, or rom_clones, if I don't have that data should I omit the line entirely or just set the value to ""?
While I do have a github account, I'm still a bit unsure about pull requests - seems like I'd have to duplicate the repo, have a local copy on my machine, and a bunch more stuff than that, so I'll probably just zip the files up (in suitable folders, and with the ini files), and then upload them somewhere - hope that's ok.
-
@udb23 I've taken the liberty of assuming that lines for which I have no data can be left out.
Here's a zip file with the overlays sorted by folder and with info.txt files for each : https://ufile.io/c9n4mSystems covered areas follows (all at 1280 x 1024);
- 1941
- 1942
- Aero Fighters
- Armed Police Batrider
- Bombjack
- Burger Time
- Centipede
- Commando
- DoDonPachi
- Dig Dug
- Donkey Kong
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- ESP Ra.De.
- Frogger
- Guwange
- Mercs
- Mr. Do
- Pacman
- Time Pilot
- Time Pilot '84
I know some of them cover systems that you've already done at 1920 x 1080. I'm not concerned about attribution, so if there are any conflicts when merging info.txt file contents, or whatever, that's no problem for me - I'm just happy to be able to share with the community.
-
Hello fellows.
@UDb23 I suggest you the creation of a
contrib
dir on your repo to receive this kind of contributions. ;-) -

-
@andrewh IMO, since you have many files, the best aproach would be you having your own repo.
Why? because @UDb23 's repo is becoming very big, with many files.
For example, if an user wants to install only the Q*bert overlay, the rpie-art tool will donwload all the files on the repo to install only one overlay. That being said, @AndrewH , consider creating your own repo. ;-)

I’d prefer for them all to be in the one place, for convenience - there are already very many locations for resources and materials - I don’t want to add one more.
Plus, manual installation is possible (and well documented) for those who don’t want to use the script.

If overlay already exists; just edit the existing info.txt file adding your overlay filename. Multiple images can be handled just separating them with a semicolon. I would suggest your overlays filenames include reference to the actual resolution. Of course I can do that renaming for you.
For fields such as launching_image, or rom_clones, if I don't have that data should I omit the line entirely or just set the value to ""?
Yes you should omit those lines entirely.

I can add reference in the readme file that files ending with AH were made by you.

I’ve put them here : https://ufile.io/c9n4m - let me know if you have any problems with them. If you can do whatever renaming or editing necessary to fit them in, that’d be much appreciated.

Ok - I left them out from the info.txt files I created.

@andrewh do as you prefer, but...
I’d prefer for them all to be in the one place, for convenience
convenience is rpie-art's reason to exist.
convenience is also the reason why I suggested a separate repository. Some users have limited space on their SD card.
Plus, manual installation is possible (and well documented) for those who don’t want to use the script.
I can't see how using another repo could hinder the manual installation.
I'm saying that with a vision focused on the end user but I have no intention of continuing to argue. It's all up to you, and I'm glad my work on rpie-art is useful for the community.
Cheers! :D

@andrewh Files downloaded. Will try to find time during the WE to check & upload.
-
@meleu I agree with you.
@AndrewH It could also be the opportunity to place all 1280x1024 overlays in one dedicated Repo. Yours and those I created for that resolution. I see no reason for users using the script to download whole repo that includes images with resolutions they don't use.
It's quite easy to setup a dedicated Repo. -
@UDb23 , @meleu - I can see sense in having separate repos for different resolutions, and I'm happy enough to go along with whatever you think is best. I'll have a go at setting one up, and come asking for help if I run into problems.
In terms of installation for users, what would you recommend? A clone of @meleu's script, an edit that allows users to select which repo, or something else?
Depending on time and a few other circumstances, I'm hoping to get around to modifying my overlays to also suit a 4:3 1600x1200 display - I have a few of those at my disposal, and if I get around to making another bartop, I'll probably use one.
