Dosbox or Scummvm for oldies?
-
Good morning everyone (or good evening),
So, I got my retropie box in a very satisfactory level. I am thinking the next level would be setting up some old pc games, mainly point and click adventures.
So, my question is: Would you suggest Dosbox or ScummVM for games like Indiana jones and the fate of atlantis, full throttle, quest for glory, monkey island, etcAlso, if I understood correctly you can bind keyboard keys on a gamepad. But can you also completely emulate a mouse with a gamepad for those games?
Cheers everyone and thanks again!

@coldnpale I personally prefer scummvm over dosbox when possible as the joypad is integrated with scummvm, dosbox takes a bit more effort to integrate. Scummvm also generally has better performance

Thanks. That's good to know! I guess the advantage of dosbox is that it supports a wide variety of games whereas scummvm specializes in those point n click style.

@coldnpale I just set up ScummVM myself and the controller works nicely. Remember to put the graphics to OpenGL, it looks much nicer that way.
I used ScummVM because I mainly just wanted to get Fate Of Atlantis and Sam And Max Hit The Road working, the two classic point and click games I own that haven't been remastered yet.
@herb_fargus I might want to set up DOSbox, for instance for Dinosaur Predators (shareware version has one of the four game modes completely playable and I played this a lot as a kid). Does setting up a controller for DOSbox take a lot of effort?

It is awesome that the gamepad works out of the box! I will use opengl, thanks! Honestly, I have hundreds of old Dos games and I can't wait to check their compatibility with Scummvm. Of course many of them, especially non-adventures, will be supported only by dosbox. Since it will probably take me some time to sort my game library and integrate it in scummvm, I guess I'll do this over the weekend.

@coldnpale I just want to add that, when using scummvm, some games still need a keyboard. Especially games that use a different button then F5 to access the save/load menus.
-
@ectoone I'll keep an eye out for those. Do you know if in ScummVM you have the option to map keyboard keys to a gamepad?

I like ScummVM simply because its easier to use than DosBox. Plus, I can run the games on my Android Tablet as it's compatible with the touchscreen.
