What are the top 5 games you currently enjoy playing the most on your Pi and why?
-
Why bother putting another emulator for it, when it can be played alongside other PS1 titles I have ? :) Doesn't really matter, as it it 2D sprited game anyway.
-
@dd-indeed that's fair, it was an honest question as it could be that it had any particularly different modes, performed better, etc.
Thanks!
-
@pjft Me too. Also because this is where Metal slug 1-6 are at as well.
I even have Metal slug 7 (XX) running and looking awesome on the ppsspp emulator. -
Let´s go:
1- Streep Hoop - Neo Geo (the best VS street basketball ever!!!)
2- Twinkle Star Sprites - Mame (when you catch the rules of the game the VS goes to crazy intense lvls :_D)
4- Parasol Star - PC Engine (similar to bubble bobble but more hard (no free lives) and with secret worlds)
4- Golden axe 1,2,3 - Mame (:P)
5- Donkey kong 1,2,3 - SNES -
- 'Mr. Gimmick' (NES) - beautiful graphics, rewarding challenge, singularly unique and amazing control scheme
- 'Little Sampson' (NES) - beautiful graphics, rewarding challenge, simply one of the most solid platformers ever released
- 'Summer Carnival '92 - RECCA' (NES/Fam) - beautiful graphics, rewarding challenge, a fantastic bullet hell and on NES hardware no less
- 'Three Wonders' (Arcade) - beautiful graphics, rewarding challenge, The inventive visuals and gameplay modes keep me coming back
- 'Super Star Wars' (SNES) - beautiful graphics, rewarding challenge, setting the mood for 'The Last Jedi'

80's gamer here, so they pre-date NES....
- M.U.L.E. (C-64 version) - imo, best game design of all time, I think Ozark software play tested this so much that I've never heard or found any bugs, damn near perfect. Not to mention one of the most "reactive" computer A.I.'s determined to make your experience different every time. Don't waste time with the NES version unless you like it watered down, C-64 was best in terms of replay (random playfield EVERY time it loaded), Atari 400/800 was extremely good also for the 4 player input options (but only around 256 different preprogrammed fields, could be somewhat unfair playing against vets). After 30+ years, I still play this game.....
- Seven Cities of Gold (C-64) - once again, Ozark programming at it's finest. Probably one of the first games ever in which you choose peaceful or warlike interaction with the A.I....
- Time Pilot (Mame) - fast shooter fix for burning off caffeine grind....
- Tempest (Mame) - see #3
- Crazy Climber (Mame) - well....I was hooked on it for a bit after buying a controller with analog sticks, but now I'm pissed at it...the A.I. on this arcade machine was just plain wrong....designed to be harder depending on the last few scores, with a cooldown period until it went back to somewhat "normal" difficulty...if you get past first level in one life, it's determined NOT to let you past the next one....almost broke my controller....
-
I forgot this in my post, but I was so amazed that I got some of the commodore 64 stuff to work, I've been stuck on it for while...I actually got some RPG's that span disks to work, which really impressed me with pi. so replace #5 with "any C-64 RPG that loads." lol
-
Added one more for good measure. It is difficult to narrow it down to 5.
- Sonic CD (Sega CD)
- Streets of Rage (Gen)
- Road Rash (PSX)
- Mega Man 1 through 6 (NES)
- Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
- Castlevania Bloodlines (Gen)
-
I built a two player arcade cab, so the most fun I'm having is playing with a buddy, while drinking haha. Most played games are probably:
- Mario Kart 64
- The battle mode inside the mario all stars version of Super Mario 3 on SNES - seriously great fun
- Super Contra
- Raiden Trad
- Xmen
-
Gorf (Mame)
Manic Miner (Speccy)
Super Mario 64 (N64 or NDS Version)
Robotron (Mame)
Delta (C64)and about 2000 others..lol
-
I am of shall we say an older generation, so my top 5, are pretty much classics, hence the reason why I had to go and buy the movie Pixels (even though it wasn't all that good!
-
PACLAND - Arcade game that was in one of the Air Force bases I was stationed at (can't remember where) but it gave me hours of entertainment.
-
Q*Bert - didn't really get into it until later, but it is one of those games where it's enjoyable but hugely frustrating when just when you think you have cleared a screen, along come the little creature and changes the colour on the block Aaarrrgghhh.
-
Donkey Kong - How high can you get? - One of the very first Atari 400 cartridges I got.
-
I-Robot - Again an RAF base game I really enjoyed playing in the NAAFI.
5 A Tie, can't separate them - Pacman and Bubble Bobble, two more games I got for the Atari 800XL (I seem to remember), and the Amiga respectively. Puzzle type games you just want to play and play, to beat that all important High Score.
-
-
Joust (Arcade Mame) - great two player game when quarters are no object.
M.U.L.E. (Atari 800) - a favorite, plus I dont have anyone to play Catan with.
Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back (Arcade) - built a cab with a yoke. Grailish.
Pac Man/Donkey Kong/Galaga (Arcade) - never had a good score back in the day. Revenge.
Impossible Mission (C64) - unfinished business. -

Oh wow, this brings back memories. I played this game a lot when I was a kid, it was way over my head at the time. I guess its time I revisited it...
-
Need another list
Defender/Robotron (Arcade) - challenging, elite arcade games that I was too afraid to play. Not anymore.
Koronis Rift (Atari 800) - Love the premise of this Lucasfilm game. A slow burn with mystery. Need to solve it.
Tempest (Arcade) - Bitchin' game with a bitchin vibe.
Dreadnaught Factor (Atari 800/C64) - Great Shmup. Cool to play on my cab with proper arcade controls.
Frostbite (Atari 2600) - This game holds up. Activision was doing the best work while Atari was all on drugs. -
5 - Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis (ScummVM). I think it's my second favourite point and click game (after Day Of The Tentacle), yet it will probably never get a remaster.
4 - Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace (PS1). Okay, so it's not exactly a great game but it's got a big nostalgia factor for me (and I'm young enough to initially like the TPM movie when it was released). Never got through the entire thing back in the day.
3 - Grand Theft Auto 2 (PS1). I never had a PS1 (I had the N64 then) but I bought a few games to play on my brother's PS1; GTA 2 is definitely my favourite even though it has less of a nostalgia factor for me than The Phantom Menace.
2 - Donkey Kong Country trilogy (SNES). The first game was a great experience back in the day. Played through it again last year but I really began to notice the downside of RCA output to HD screen, and I'm getting increasingly afraid of the batteries in the cartridges dying on me. I've recently bought the second and third game of the trilogy, never really got into those as a kid, but haven't played them yet on the SNES so I hope I'll take the time for them soon, to get into the mood for Tropical Freeze on the Switch.
1- Super Mario 64 (N64). One of the N64 games that the Pi 3 can reasonably handle, and about the only game I've already played more than a few minutes of on RetroPie. I doubt if I'll be able to get through the game before it's rereleased on the Switch though (sorry RetroPie, but any game on you that comes to the Switch, I'll play on there instead). And @Impman66, I thought the movie Pixels was pretty funny, though, as one of my geek friends put it, seeing as the movie is in 3D it should have been named Voxels.
-
@billyh I bet that's what they're naming the sequel

I seem to be playing these more than anything else
....Football Champ (Arcade)
Phantom Slayer (Tandy)
Driver 2 (PS1)
Outrun (Arcade)
Great Escape (Spectrum) -
I'm going to use the criterion "games I play quite frequently".
-
Seaquest (Atari 2600): I was frequently trying to beat my score, and now it has RetroAchievements Leaderboards (for high score and high score on silent run) I play it even more.
-
Tekken 3 (PS1): my older kid loves to defy me on this game, then I have to kick his butt (and get mine kicked) from time to time.
-
Super Puzzle Fighter (MAME): my wife loves it. And she rules. My butt is kicked here.
-
Mega Man * (NES): any Mega Man game from NES. I revisit them from time to time because (1) I love them and (2) I like to try to earn some of those challenging achievements.
-
Shadow Dancer (Mega Drive): my favorite Mega Drive game. I'm constantly trying to beat it on Hard difficulty and failing at that elevator on the Statue of Liberty.

I seem to be playing these more than anything else
....
I posted these and didn't add a note why....so here's why....Football Champ (Arcade) - I used to spend a fortune playing this with a mate at the local bowling alley. It is very addictive, funny and controversial.
Phantom Slayer (Tandy) - I had a Coco 2 as a kid. Phantom Slayer is probably one of the first FPS games. It has very simple but creepy sound effects and still has the ability to make me jump.
Driver 2 (PS1) - I love open world games (especially ones that involve driving). I used to love playing Turbo Esprit (after I dumped the Coco and got a Spectrum) and spent hours 'cruising' the streets. With the Driver games I just do the same but at break neck speeds trying to lose the cops.
Outrun (Arcade) - one of my all time favourite arcade driving games (after Hard Drivin'). Magical Sound Shower is still one of the catchiest tunes.....one day I might complete it. However, my gaming ability is declining as I'm aging somewhat....so that day may never come....
Great Escape (Spectrum) - one of the most atmospheric games ever made.
-
What I’ve been constantly playing (not necessarily my top 5)
- F-Zero (SNES): a timeless classic with timeless gameplay, that Mute City soundtrack is heavenly, gets me so pumped. It’s just so easy to pick a Cup and have a blast.
- Street Fighter III 3rd Strike (FB alpha): runs beautiful on the Pi, perfect match for my Hori Fighting Stick mini. Another perfect pick up and play.
- Super Mario World (SNES): what can be said about it? I’m slowly beating it again for the tenth time. It just makes me happy.
- Super Contra 3 (SNES): Didn’t play much of it back in the day but now I’m loving the challenge. Almost beating it.
- H.E.R.O (SG-1000): the Atari 2600 version was my favourite game as a kid. I just recently discovered this updated/prettier version. I’m totally back into it.
Wish I could cite another 100 games ;)
