Nuts caught in a VICE

@spudsmctoole This thread should help.
Basically move to "swap joystick ports" and press "m" on the keyboard, then press the key you want use to swap joystick ports. After this go to settings management and "save hotkeys".
You do need a keyboard connected to do this, but you only need it once.
They is libreto version of vice (lr-vice) as well. It think is under the experimental emulators.

@tuki_cat Works perfectly. Thanks! :)
EDIT: Spoke too soon :( It works fine until you quit out, but not after that. I tried "Save Hotkeys", and "Save Settings", and "Save Hotkeys" then "Save Settings", but whatever I do the hotkey doesn't survive a quit.

@spudsmctoole When I save the hotkeys file, it comes out as this:
*# VICE hotkey mapping file
A hotkey map is read in as a patch to the current map.
File format:
- comment lines start with '#'
- keyword lines start with '!keyword'
- normal line has 'keynum path&to&menuitem'
Keywords and their lines are:
'!CLEAR' clear all mappings
!CLEAR*
Which is the default. My changes don't seem to have affected it even though they registered and worked in the emulator.

@spudsmctoole Okay, I think I've fixed this. After doing the hotkey thing I went to Save Joymap rather than Save Hotkeys, and that seems to have done the trick. The changes persist now, and the file they appear in is sdl-joymap-C64.vjm rather than sdl-hotkey-C64.vkm. Thanks for the tip, got me on the road :)

@spudsmctoole Great - glad its working

@spudsmctoole you should try out lr-vice. I really like it far more than vice. If you go into retroarch gui go to quick menu, options and change the player one controller from keyboard to joystick you then can use the controller. The y button brings up a virtual keyboard, start brings up a menu that has a swap joystick option. The select button switches your controller between joystick and mouse. So in the menus you can use a real mouse or your controller as the mouse. It has auto warp so you dont have to keep turning it on and off. It runs the games great too.

@edmaul69 Cheers, will take a look at it. Tape loading is practically instant on this version now and the hotkeys solve most problems, but disk games can still take a few seconds to get going and it'd be nice to have per-game saving.
-
Hi,
Re lr-vice, I tried it with a few random tape and disk images, and can bring up the virtual keyboard on screen (to exit crack intro's etc), but how the heck do you actually use it?
I read elsewhere that there is a bug in it and once you bring it up on screen, you need to then press "select" (xbox 360 controller in use) and use the left analogue thumbpad, but this does nothing.
Ive tried every key combo I can think of !Also, when you say the tape loads are nearly instant, do you mean compared to the minutes they used to take, or literally just seconds?
Mine still take a while to load.
Many thanks. -
@rustymg The way I got it to go away was by clicking on the "X" in the virtual keyboard's top left corner, ie what we'd normally consider the Escape key.
And the tape files I've used so far load in 3-4 seconds. You have to bump up the tape speed in the settings, though - the maximum seems to be 512.
(Both these things are in normal VICE, dunno about lr-vice.)

@spudsmctoole hi, when you bring the virtual keyboard up on screen though, HOW do you move to highlight the key you want?
I can only bring the virtual keyboard up - I can't "move" to select any key :-( -
@rustymg Ooh, that's odd. I just use the joystick, if that doesn't work I have no idea what to suggest.
