    What is the MAME ROW?

MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!

    Notes:

    1. We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.

    2. There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.

    3. Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous rounds topics (link below).

Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming > MAME Random Of the Week" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.

These "rules" are constantly being improved!

@obsidianspider I had some fun trying these out last night!

      I'm Sorry
This is a very strange game, it turns the usual Japanese weirdness up a level. It's sort of like a poor Pacman rip off, and actually reminded me of Hungry Horace on the ZX Spectrum.

      Hungry Horace
      0_1519122602667_horace.jpg

The aim seemed simple enough, collect all the gold bars before going to the exit, while jumping the marauding barrel and either jumping or punching the Men in Black. The weirdness comes in when said Men in Black catch you, when they appear to strip off to a leotard and give you a sort of bondage-style ass whipping! Very odd.

Looking up Wikipedia shed some light on the game - it's political satire, with the title being a play on the Japanese word for Prime Minister (Sōri).

      I quite liked this one!

      Pleiads
A decent space invaders clone with the added complexity of the invaders coming down to earth and making buildings. I was sure I'd seen this one in the MAMEROW before, but I searched and couldn't find it. I have definitely played it before and found it just a bit too hectic, with sluggish controls, to be very playable.

      The Final Round
I like this one a lot. The selection screen at the start where you get to distribute your points between speed, power and stamina is a nice touch, and makes it slightly more strategic than a basic button masher. On the other hand the actual boxing match is quite difficult to control, the block button does work, but there's no time to choose a high block or a low block, it seemed to be pretty much luck whether you block or not.

The first game of this I spread my points out relatively evenly, and was beaten on match 2. The next game I concentrated on Power, resulting in a noticeable slower fighter who took damage easily. When he did land a punch though, it was devastating - I got to level 3 on this attempt.

The Final Round was a reasonable game, and if nothing else, should win the prize for the most politically incorrect advertising flyer of the week.

There's no way she could keep that eighties perm looking good in the boxing ring.

I think I enjoyed I'm Sorry best this week, and it will probably be the best option for a high score competition, so this week, that's where my vote goes!

              First run at 16 739

I only went to level 2. These stones on the lake are tricky, especially when you haven't planned your exit, and there are 3 men in black, a ghost and a barrel running around the lake!

It's a surprisingly fun game. Very weird, but plays very well, especially for a parody/satire game.

                This game is pretty cool.
I made a score up to 40k but lost it somehow :(

Got as far as the fifth level. I was taken by surprise a bit on level 3 where for some reason the President had to smash up ovens as well as collect gold bars.

The rocks in the water are tricky. The jump is tricky and once in a rock you can't hang around or the men in black all block your exits.

In levels 4 and more so 5 those wrestler guys are a pain, as you can only stun them. I did notice though that none of the enemy characters ever seem to use the secret passages, so my main tactic was to try to lure them all to the bottom of the screen before using a passage to get up to the top with a few seconds to collect gold before they all made their way back up again.

Level 5 has a nasty dead end that I got trapped in every time though.

                  41877 is my best score.

This is another game that works well with a 4-way controller, rather than 8-way.

And then when I think this can't get any weirder, level 6 turns out to be level 1 repeated but with giant head Micheal Jacksons.

                    0_1519603932516_imsorrymj.jpg

Level 7 is level 2 but with what look like long jump athletes PLUS big head Michael Jacksons. (Plus the men in black and the wrestlers)

I kind of want to keep going to discover what other weird stuff there is!

                    Interesting observations:

You can punch enemy's through the thin walls without being in danger.

You can kill the wrestlers if you hit them enough times (need to get them somewhere the men in black/barrel can't creep up on you)

On level 2 when the statue of the president chases you, if you lead him back to his plinth he will climb back on and you receive a 1500 point bonus (as well as getting rid of one enemy)

There's quite an interesting YouTube video on the background to this game:
