Joystick not working in MAME only

I am using Virtualman’s 128 gb image on an arcade cabinet. Everything works fine except the joystick doesn’t work on any arcade games. The buttons are all working but not the joystick. I’ve tried everything I can think of but I can’t work it out.
Any help would be much appreciated.

@jjr71 3rd party images are not supported over here. Try with image provided by this website and see if the problems with the joystick still persists.
