@mitu the point i tried to make is i have since wiped and reinstalled everything necessary and as such started from a clean slate, but despite having nothing meaningful installed or downloaded i have no space available and just wanted to know if anyone had any similar events or a shot in the dark as to what could help, any help at this point is greatly appreciated

What does this command say (to be entered after quitting Emulation Station without shutdown or reboot, e.g. by pressing F4):

you may need to expand your file system. in RetroPieMenu of EmulationStation, open Raspi-config, go to "advanced options" and select first option, expand filesystem.

new problem... it refuses to boot at all or atleast is not sending anything via hdmi to the screen no idea what to do now prior to writing this topic i did expand the file system as i had done a bit of reading and finding bits out before posting.. since i last posted all i did was turn it off now turned it back on got a constant red LED and no signal to screen, all connections are proper

is it possible i have a bad sector on the micro sd card causing this? pondering as to whether its worth the hassle of completely formatting the micro sd card and rebuild it from there?

Formatting the card won't do anything, since flashing the image effectively starts you off with a clean slate.

The problem is that when you say that "everything was getting slow," I don't have a clear idea of what's actually happening. Is the ES front-end jittery when you scroll through menus? Are your game lists taking a long time to populate? Is it certain emulators that are running slow? If so, which emulators, which games, and at what points in those games are they happening?

Any number of problems can cause system slowdowns: poor power supply, overheating, and unstable overclock settings are three that I can think of off the top of my head. But it's hard to get a clear idea of anything without describing what you're actually seeing.

I also don't understand how you wouldn't know the model of your Pi or where you bought it. There had to have been some planning involved on your part if you went through the process of buying a Pi to assemble a RetroPie setup. Didn't you look into which model you should buy for your needs, and which cases would fit the board?

We really really need the information requested by @BuZz at the top of this post. Without anything meaningful to go off, we may as well just guess at what your problem is randomly.

From what we've been given so far though, and the fact that you don't know what type of Pi you've got, I'd say this is from a pre-loaded bundle you've bought. I'd guess this could be a dodgy SD and you should try another.

Without knowing what the hardware is, it’s hard to give any advice....

Chances are you have a bad SD card... or a bad system...

Does it use a small SD card or full size?

And if full size, how many USB ports does it have?

$20 says he didn't get rid of the extra partitions before re-installing. He formatted with old partitions still in place. (Not really betting $20..don't get excited!) ;) Use Windows disk management..EZ PZ. Prolly shows like 4 partitions or more now reducing the "usable" size until he nukes them. Win10 Instructions: (Right click Windows "Start or Menu" Icon=>Select "Disk Management")

Make SURE you have the right drive letter before doing this!!!!

Delete Volumes (all that exist) (These are partitions causing your space shortage)
Make Simple Volume (This will format the card for you)
Profit. Reload RetroPie with Etcher or similar
