Updating underlying OS packages breaks retropi 4.4
-
Installed a fresh image of retropie 4.4 today. I then ran retropie setup and then update and I updated the underlying OS packages. This appears to remove a lot of rpi hack diversions. Afterwards my Xbox 360 wireless controller is unresponsive. Redoing controller setup does not fix it. Can anyone else confirm that updating OS packages breaks controllers irreparably? This is the second time this happened to me, first time was after I got 4.4 setup perfect! :(

I cannot confirm that. How did you setup your image - give more details about your system as requested at https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
Note that a what you're seeing during the upgrade - the messages likeremoving diversion of .. by ...
- are part of a normal kernel upgrade, carried out as part of the Raspbian upgrade.EDIT: On a second look, it could be a problem with the new Raspbian Stretch kernel and the Xbox drivers, I remember a few posts about a similar situation - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/17495/xbox-360-usb-controller-not-working-in-retroarch-and-cores or https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/17537/xbox-one-s-xbox-360-controller-issues/

@jasonw Yes it does. Xbox controllers wired and wireless are broken with more recent OS/kernel updates. My advice, fresh install a working version (for example the beta Strech release, 4.4 perhaps could work too) and update RetroPie without updating OS/kernel, that should keep Xbox controllers working.

@jasonw can you try removing the
xpad
package driver and install thexboxdrv
package to see if the controller is detected ? -
@mitu I’m pretty sure the xboxdrv driver no longer works with the current setup. I think this broke in the 4.9 kernel and I don’t believe it was ever fixed.

@jasonw The kernel 4.9 was used in Jessie and in the first Stretch releases (up until 2018-04-18), so I doubt that version broke xboxdrv, you probably mean the version after that - 4.14.x - which is now the base for current Raspbian Stretch and the RetroPie 4.4 image.
