XBox 360 controller stops working as soon as I enter Steam Big Picture (Moonlight)

Power Supply used: 5V 2.1A
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest): 4.4
Built From: retropie-4.4-rpi2_rpi3.img written on own SD card
USB Devices connected: XBox 360 wireless receiver
Controller used: xbox 360 controller

I have Moonlight setup on my RPi3B. The xbox controller I use works just fine in the menu system of RetroPie, but as soon as I enter Steam (into Big Picture mode) my controller is not responsive. Rather the mouse and keyboard of the host PC running Steam works.
Looking for suggestions on how to get it working.
