Connor use controllers in game!

Good morning all, firstly, please let me say hello to everyone. I’m a newbie to RetroPie and I have virtually no clue about the installation of it etc., but we all have to start somewhere, and this is that start for me, so please be gentle if I sound a bit thick!

Secondly, on to my question. I have purchased a second hand pi with Retropie installed. All seems good to go, apart from one major problem, my controller only works in emulationstation and not in any of the games. I have tried the following:- remapping the buttons in emulationstation, deleting the corresponding configuration of button mapping’s of emulationstation in retropie configuration page, then remapping, but none of this works. It’s as if it doesn’t relay the new button mapping over to Retroarch for the global mapping configurations. Whenever I start a game, it happily tells me in yellow at the bottom left of the screen that it is “not configured”.
To make matters worse, I tried to remap the buttons for reicast and mame in retroarch and now would like to delete those configurations.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

@fluke Please give more details about your system as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. In particular, what controller are you using and how is it connected (wired/wireless).

A second hand RetroPie setup has always been somewhat of a grey area for support here. It pretty much qualifies as a third party image, as it contains almost all of the same reasons why we don't support them. You should know that more issues like you're having are bound to come up frequently and because you didn't set the system up yourself, it'll always be a guessing game for you, as well as us. In the long run, you'll be far better off by starting with a fresh image from this site like everyone else. If you happen to run into problems along the way, we're always here to help and you'll be much more able to inform us where and when things appeared to go wrong.

@fluke Welcome to Retropie and this forum. :)

I second @mediamogul in that you'd be well advised to start with a fresh up-to-date image. The effort and learning will pay off as you'll have a clean Retropie system the friendly people here can help you with better, and you'll learn something new which is always a good thing.

Ok, I will look at starting a fresh at some point. Trouble is time!!! But thanks anyways.
