Hello. I have a Rpi 3B+ running Retropie 4.4.2 and I'm attempting to run the game Vapor TRX.
When launching, it seems to launch and flashes a white border, then boots back to menu.
I have the .139 romset and it's in the arcade folder.
The game itself has a .chd which I've tried putting in its own folder and in the .zip itself.
I have also rebuilt the romset (I think) with clrmamepro.
(completely irrelevant, but within the set, Galaga seems to work fine, which makes me think I actually do have the right set.)
I just recently checked the log and this is what it says...
      lvl2: Attempting to launch game...
      lvl2: /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 SYS arcade /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/vaportrxp.zip
      lvl2: Creating surface...
      lvl2: Created window successfully.
lvl2: Added known joystick Sony PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller (instance ID: 0, device index: 0)
lvl2: Added known joystick Sony PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller (instance ID: 0, device index: 0)
      lvl2: req sound [basic.launch]
      lvl2: (missing)

From this I gather it's missing a sound file, but there's already a .snd in the .zip.
(side question,do I really have to have all the games in the romset for it to work?)

I'm not entirely sure what is wrong here, any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Use the Runcommand menu to select Mame2010 and also to launch the game with verbose logging, then post the contents of the /dev/shm/runcommand.log file.
The lvl2: req sound [basic.launch] message is from Emulationstation and not from the emulator, it can be ignored (most likely the theme does not have a sound asset for game launching).

Hm, the only error at the end (Illegal instruction) usually comes up with a wrong ROM zip. I assume you created an arcade/vaportrx folder and copied the vaportrx.chd file there ?
Can you try to launch the same ROM (+chd) using a Windows Mame version just to check if the ROM is ok ?

@mitu I did create a folder for the .chd, yes. I am installing and trying to launch MAME on my laptop now to test the rom

@mitu okay so it says I'm missing one or more required rom or chd images, but I thought there was only one of each for this game.
EDIT: upon moving the chd alongside the zip, it says out of memory after launch

@ir137 The rom could be one of the files in the zip (although I see only 2 ROMs seem to be included). You could try and validate the game again in ClrMamePro (or RomCenter) just to make sure the ROM / CHG are ok.

@mitu so it looks like the scan shows the chd is version 4, and the required is version 5. can clrmamepro fix this somehow? or do I need to go find another chd from somewhere?

@ir137 Are you sure it's not the other way around ? CHD version 5 was introduced in Mame 0.145u (Feb 2012), after Mame 2010. Can you try running the ROM with a current Mame in Windows and see if it works (if the test you performed was not already with a current version) ?

@mitu that's odd...it launches and loads with lag on a current version of mame. Within the scan results window, after scrolling down to find the game and expanding it, it still shows required chd mismatch: found version 4/required 5.

@ir137 I think the mismatch of CHD version is ok, since current MAME might be expecting v5. But the fact that it loads it means the ROM is ok (with current Mame). Since this looks like a 3rd arcade game, it would run even worse on a PI (or none at all, given the requirements).

@mitu huh. well that's kind of dissapointing, but you're right, I can't seem to make it function smoothly on a PC even. It's odd a game from the late 90s can't function on more advanced hardware. Thanks for your help!!
