New Overlay: 1942 - Williams
-
We all know 1942 by Romstar/Capcom.
Less known is the fact that also a version distributed by Williams existed (actually a "conversion kit").It is very rare; it seems this is the only original picture available (from KLOV).
All the original artwork of that cab (in good condition but not exactly in perfect shape) has been scanned many years ago, as you can read in this old thread on KLOV forum.
Basically one guy commited to put all pieces together, restore the artwork and make it available to those that provided and scanned the complete original artwork (Bezel, CPO, Marquee, Instruction card and side art). That guy did create restored artwork but, for whatever reason, decided not to share the resulting files as promised. The result being he got banned from the forum but nobody got the files.
Luckily the various original scanned images are still available, thanks to Zorg.
The artwork is particular and, in my opinion, absolutely worth restoring; and in fact that's what I decided to do.
Bezel, Marquee and Instruction Card are therefore now available ;-)
Based on that, of course, I also created the overlay and launching image for Retropie (lr-mame or lr-fba).
Here you go:

You can find this and more hand crafted quality overlays in the rpie-ovl repository.
And if you want an easy way to install them, @meleu created a great dedicated script.
Perform these commands on your RetroPie:cd git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/meleu/rpie-art cd rpie-art ./rpie-art.sh
After launching
rpie-art.sh
script you just have to follow the instructions in the dialog boxes. Once you have therpie-art.sh
script, choose the Update option to get all the latest art in the repository. -
Very cool! It's great to see this variant artwork resurrected and it looks fantastic. Nice work.

@udb23 Awesome work as always man. Going to love getting my hands on these and using them on my rig. Thanks for sharing. :)

Fantastic work my friend. Looks great and just one more thing to add to my "completed" setup. Thanks again for your hard work and great designs :D

Once again truly amazing work. I can't wait to finish my bar top arcade build so I can use your artwork collection. 😱

I don't use bezels, but I just wanted to say that it's worth it to emulate the Williams clone of 1942 (lr-fba works well). Unlike the Capcom/Romstar version, the Williams version correctly refers to the 2nd button evasion maneuver as a Loop, not Roll, and consequently has Ls in the lower right corner instead of Rs. Also, the stage names are better (clearer).
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
