I understand there are 6 different MAME emulators but only 3 MAME rom folders, so first question is how to know which folder to put the roms in.

2nd question is, I have very latest MAME on my PC that runs Killer Instinct just fine. Is it an option to put that latest MAME version on the retropie so that game would work? As I understand it the MAME on retropie is for the older 37b5..

Using pi model 3b and latest retro 3.8.1 sd.

said in General question about MAME versions.:

first question is how to know which folder to put the roms in.

In the link provided it does name the specific folders for each version of MAME.

Is it an option to put that latest MAME version on the retropie so that game would work?

Is it an option but it's currently not a feature, so the short answer is no not right now. :(

Here's another handy link for Managing MAME ROMs and specific versions in addition to DATs to build the correct sets.

The answers are on the page - It tells you which folder to use for which mame emulator and lists the mame versions available.

I don't know if killer instinct works - it's listed for lr-fba-next but it didn't work for me (seems to freeze at a system diagnostics / test at the beginning)

@BuZz that's embarrassing. My bad. Apologies for completely missing the answer to my first question.

As for Killer Instinct that's something I'm not alone with from what I can tell. Also struggling with Robocop and Indiana jones but I still have some other things to try.

As for getting specific MAME roms, is the general practice to get a huge multi-gig package for that particular MAME version and just pluck out the roms you want? That's what I've figured from those links.

Yeah I don't think it works in any emulator currently running on RetroPie.

That is one way or if you're looking for just a few you can find them via a search engine instead of downloading gigabytes. I believe the current version of MAME with CHDs is approaching 500GB nowadays. :)

                      killer instinct does not work.

lr-fba-next: preliminary support, but not playable (AFAIK)
lr-mame2003: does not work because of a bug - https://github.com/libretro/mame2003-libretro/issues/38 - almost certainly would be too slow if it did work.
advamame: works, but about 0.5 fps.

n64 has a version you could try.
