Can I get a prebuilt lr-mess core and its respective files?
-
I'm trying to get Phillips CD-i emulation to work, and to do that, I need the mess_libretro core installed. However, when I do try to install it, it works for like an hour, then my RPi3 hangs.

You might also try AdvanceMESS, which is installed alongside AdvanceMAME 3.x.
-
@mediamogul AdvanceMAME 3.x is not in RetroPie-Setup.
-
It's listed as advmame.
-
@sterophonick are you sure it's hanging? i would expect it to take multiple hours, and some steps may take a lot of time.
-
@dankcushions I saw the pi getting stuck at a 1KB C++ Source file.
-
The last time I tried building lr-mess, it took over 24hrs on a stock pi3 and then failed. It's the only emulator to play neogeocd games with music and in the chd format. Maybe lr-mame but i havent tried building and the pc version requires the exact name mame wants.

Here's the core file, compiled for the Pi already. I should note that this was compiled by @edmaul69 originally, and also that this core is fairly out of date. (it corresponds with the ROM set for MESS 0.151 I believe?)
For this core to work properly, you'll need to grab the hash files from a recent build of MAME and put them into
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame/hash
. (Skip this step if that folder already exists and has a bunch of XML files in it; I think it's one of the first things that gets installed when you install lr-mess)Oh yeah, quick addendum: You probably aren't gonna get support with this core if you use the one in this post. You'll have to install it through RetroPie-Setup if you want to get support.

@supercatfooz Here's mine which I got from someone on facebook to get ngcd working. It's from May.

@darksavior Oh wow, that's way more up to date than what I was using. Thanks!
-
@darksavior @SuperCatFooz yeah the one i had was fixed to address the issues of the controls in a few systems that i used on it. Sadly advmess has the controls lacking in several systems. Example intellivision allowed you to setup both players controllers with keypad but only saved player 1’s settings. Atari 7800 was just missing some of the switch functions. So it was modified to address those kinds of issues.

Thank you so much!

@Darksavior hey, you've done some excellent work with retropie. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through some of your postings. Do you think you would be kind enough to repost the mess core that the dead link no longer navigates to? I am curious about something and would love to test it. I have an alternate build, and can share with you, as well, for comparison sake.

@KMFDManic If you're using the latest RetroPie,
lr-mess
is available as a binary download, it doesn't need to be compiled, can be installed directly. -
@mitu no longer using a retropie setup, unfortunately. The last one I was dabbling with went to a good friend, since I focus more on the Mini NES/SNES/PSC now. But, nearly all we do for these minis can be migrated to RetroPie and vice versa. If you happen to have the latest binary in .so, that would be quite helpful for 3 specific tests I want to run to compare to my current compile, which is at:
MESS is a mess, to say the least:)
Thank you:)

@mitu I also have a special fork of MAME 2003 Xtreme, which has special additions like Cusfom Osts, which will also work on RetroPie:

You can download it directly from https://files.retropie.org.uk/binaries/stretch/rpi3/libretrocores/lr-mess.tar.gz, note it's been compiled for Raspbian Stretch and might not work on other
armhf
platforms with different libc, etc. -
@mitu thank you. I will give it a test. The libraries tend to become more problematic the higher the MAME version goes.
-
@KMFDManic Your question was answered, but I haven't really done anything to be considered "work", but thanks. I'm just a guy that's been using emulators for ~20yrs that has had more than enough time to figure out this stuff, but I have no coding skills...
I haven't used lr-mess since lr-neocd was released.

@mitu I have tested that build, as well as a few other compiles, too. The only stuff not working appears to be stuff like Tomy Caveman, which uses the hh_ucom.cpp driver. But, have Philips CD-i and many others working great. Curious what would prevent a few games from properly loading. Again, could be related to libraries, as even MAME is a tough one to run without additional libraries, such as LibreELEC. I was hoping a different compile would help tcaveman. But, every build, other than on PC, seems to fail at working with it, and similarly minded games that aren't contingent on hash files. Thanks again:)
