It looks like it's Xbox compatible so it might work with the xpad Xbox driver, though I don't think it will work out-of-the-bix . But looking at the reviews and considering the price, I'd rather get a proper Xbox One controller.

I really like the form factor and the fact that I could use it with my xbone in a pinch. currently I'm using a PS1 controller connected through a titanium PS to USB adapter.

I've been told that the Hori mini is a really good lag-free option. what do you think would be the best option for reducing the input lag? can it get better than my current setup?

Anything that is wired should have minimal input lag compared to wireless. As for the Hori mini, which model are you referring to ?

@mitu I was wondering if maybe the PS controller running through the adapter would slow it down a little compared to a direct connection like the Hori. what do you think? would the signal passing through the adapter slow it down a bit?

Do you perceive a slowdown ? Do you think there is a slowdown or it's just a 'catch-em-all' situation ?

@mitu it's hard to tell really. I mean, I can definitely tell when I use my 8bit do wirelessly, but with the adapter, it's much harder. I wonder if anyone has a definitive answer on that. whether adapters can slow down the signal at all

AFAIK the PS4 mini works with RetroPie, I think there was a topic back a few months discussing it - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16115/fyi-playstation-hori-mini-controller-works.

That's what the adapter specs will tell you. There's definitely a 'slowdown', but if it's less the 1 frame (and chances are it's considerably less), I doubt you'll be able to notice it or it would affect your gameplay.

I found one for 20 bucks on ebay. I'm going to get it and see if I can get actual numbers.

You found one ... ? A controller, an adapter ?

@mitu I bought the HORI mini ps4 controller. it looks really cool and has good reviews. I'm going to test both and see if there's a difference

@mitu just popping in to report that I tested the HORI controller. it's lovely. definitely noticed a slightly better response. with a few tweaks even punch out is very doable. the form factor is excellent as well.
