N64 Controls

I have been trying out retropie from time to time over the years, and always got stuck with various issues.
Today I decided to really give it a proper try, and so loaded various games from the nintendo series.
I use only a keyboard for now, and set all the controller options. NES was fine, SNES was fine, however N64, none of the buttons worked, only select and start. I noticed that some buttons I had never configured in the controller, like c / p / i seemed to do something, however the standar a/b/x/y that I have set up in the controller don't work.
I read a number of posts, however they appeared to be about mapping, and my issue is with a keyboard, not changing controllers. Any ideas?
