100% noob trying to be a geek, begging for help with Roms. Please......
-
@ucald4amarine https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Arcade pay careful attention to each step.
-
After reading through, I see that my issue is probably in what kind of ROM Im downloading. But... I have no idea how to see what kind of ROM it is that I have, nor, through the websites Im using, does it show what kind of version this is going to be.
-
Im so sorry for having to bring this question up... I know its probably a very simple answer for just about everyone here. Im just so new to this that its stupid... I decided to go MAME as I wanted to learn about Pi, and possibly learn a little about coding. Something Ive wanted to learn my whole life. But... Maybe JAMMA would have been a better route...

yeah, we can't tell you where to get roms, but you have the name of the romset to look for, so i would search for that.
-
@dankcushions
Totally understand why you can't tell me. But would you be able to tell me how to search? Not what to search per say, but where in the ROMs itself I could see what kind of ROMs they are? -
@ucald4amarine you can't, really. you have to search for the entire romset with the version number on the link, for the emulator you want to use - it will be 10-20GB or so.
-
@dankcushions so, somewhere before the download, it should or will say somewhere in the description what kind of ROM it is? Because of the 2 sites I've been using, there hasn't been anything anywhere about what kind it is.
-
@ucald4amarine again, you're not looking for single roms, you're looking for the 10-20GB collections of the versions numbers i said. don't use whatever sites you're using - search with google or whatever :)
-
@dankcushions wait, what?! Did I miss something? You mean that what I should have been googling is a complete set rather than just the individual ROMs like I've been doing?! That's the solution to my whole problem?!
-
One more question then. Would it be better to use an older version? (Pi 2) Specifically, because I was looking for games such as: Metal Slug. And it looks like retropie 3 doesnt run that?
-
@ucald4amarine No, that's absurd. Use the latest Pi 3 model (3B+). Any game that would run on a Pi2 would run better on a Pi3.
-
@mitu well, there was a game list, that showed that some games, (specifications, metal slug.) Would run on the old versions, but wouldn't run on 3. So... That's why I'm asking.
-
@ucald4amarine Where did you get this information ?
-
@mitu dankcushion left me this link:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/ArcadeUnder emulator types, (mame for all, etc) there is a list of games that work for that emulator.and it shows metal slug working under pi version 1 and 2, but failing under 3.
-
@ucald4amarine You are looking at the list for
mame4all
emulator, but that is an old and unmaintained emulator, that is used forPi1/2Pi 1/0, but not recommended for the Pi3. If you look at the page @dankcushions pointed, the recommended emulators for a Pi3 arelr-fbalpha
andlr-mame2003
, and especially for Neogeo games thelr-fbalpha
is the best option. It's written right there on the same page. It seems you're ignoring or just flat out not reading the documentation and the replies on this topic. -
@mitu No, no thats not it at all... When I try to bring up the list for 1r-fbalpha, the first listing for metal slug shows up as untested. And as far as 1r-mame2003, it wont load anything for me at all. Just says there is an issue with my browser size.
Believe me, I am trying not to waste yours, or anyone elses time. Im simply asking questions here. Ill be the first to admit that I dont know everything to do with computers. But I am also more than willing to read and try my best at figuring it out. Which... I feel I have done due diligence on. Sorry if you feel Im wasting your time here... -
@ucald4amarine I don't know which page are you looking at, but I see it's supported for RPI3:
Also, Untested doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Can you tell us the exact wording of the error?
Normally, lr-mame2003 "just works"ā¢ if you got the correct ROM set.

I think he/she is referring to the Google docs page that's not loading, not the actual ROM.

@mitu After reading his/her post again, I concur. It's too early in the morning here, I guess. š³
