I start up a game, push the combination to get the menu, go to:
Main Menu -> Settings -> Input -> Input User 1 Binds -> Change "User 1 Device Type" to "Classic Gamepad". After pushing the combination to close the emulator and return to Retropie menu, I start up the game again, and the setting is back to "Gamepad", not "Classic Gamepad".

I've tried to set "Save Configuration on Exit" to "True", going to Quick Menu -> Overrides -> Save Core Override (also Game Override), manually saving the config on Main Menu -> Configuration. In addition, I tried to manually edit the file /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/config/MAME 2003-Plus/MAME 2003-Plus.cfg, with the setting "input_libretro_device_p1" and "input_device_p1" to various variables ("0", "1", "2", "3", "snes", "MAME classic") Nothing helps.

I don't want to have to change the setting every time I fire up a MAME game. I just want to keep the setting on "Classic Gamepad" because I like it more that way.

How can I permanently change this?

What is the default for FBA?

Our Gamepad is FBA "Modern" and our "Classic" is the same as their "Classic". In my mind everything worked out happily with the defaults being the same for both cores but maybe that's not true.

well if you only play sf2 or use a sf2 fightpad as your controller. Classic is for every other game other than sf2 when using a modern controller. I have no idea what fba defaults are i would assume they would use classsic as most people use moder controllers and play more than sf2.

Classic is mames default xbox360 layout mark

yea the default isint a big deal it can be changed. It would be nice for me as well if the default was classic but someone else who only plays st2 may have a differing opinion. Sticks and stones at the end of the day :)
