    Problem with slideshow screensaver using custom folder

      Hello. I am using a raspberry pi 3b+ with Retropie 4.4 which I downloaded from https://retropie.org.uk/download/ and when I try and use a slideshow screensaver with a custom image folder I only get a blank white screen on my older 42" TV connected via HDMI. I am trying to display photos from my phone which I copied using SFTP to folder /home/pi/.emulationstation/slideshow/images. I have a custom 4 player arcade controller connected via usb. I am trying to use it like a digital picture frame when I am not playing video games. I have screensaver setting set to slideshow and slideshow screensaver settings are

      • swap image 5 seconds
      • stretch images off
      • background audio set to default
      • use custom images on
      • custom image dir /home/pi/.emulationstation/slideshow/images
      • custom image dir recursive tried both settings
      • custom image filter .png, .jpg

      Why do I only see the blank white screen?

        @boesiii Check the Emulationstation log file in /home/pi/.emulationstation/es_log.txt for any errors related to the slideshow. What type of images have you copied ?

          The images are photos taken with my android phone but they are typical JPG images, nothing special.

            I do have the Tronkyfran theme installed. There are errors in the log that talk about missing emulators but I assume that is because I dont have games in some of the emulators.

            I wonder if the white screen I see is because of the theme I am using.

              @boesiii Could be, if your VRAM is set too high in Emulationstation.

                Emulation Station will show white screens as soon as you get to 20 collections with most themss.

                Change to carbon theme and watch it not have a problem.

                Known bug for the last year and a half. You can google it

                  @mikeylikesit33 The 'White screen of death' has been an issue in the original Emulationstation, but it was solved a long time ago in the RetroPie fork. However, if you're allocating too much VRAM to Emulationstation, you'll exhaust the PI's VRAM and you can still encounter this problem.

                    @mitu I understand it was supposedly fixed, except I can break it very easily repeating the same steps of adding collections up to 20.

                    Doesn’t matter what I set my VRAM to. I have it at 80 right now, but tried to tweak it over a wide range, up and down, and gave up.

                    I installed the binary, compiled, and even deleted and reinstalled it. Twice I said, gotta be something else Indid... let me flash a fresh image, toss my roms on, and then set up my collections one by one doing nothing else... Boom!

                    The good news is, the Carbon theme is fine with me and seems to not give me the white screen.

                    Running on a Raspberry Pi 3B+, multipke new SD cards that show no errors in SD utilities...

                      @mikeylikesit33 What version of RetroPie/Emulationstation are you running ? What theme are you using ? What resolution is your TV/Monitor ?

                        @mitu right now, the latest source compiles for all core.

                        But like I said, doesn’t matter if I install the binaries, or flash a fresh downloaded image.

                        Oh, and I tested on 2 different Pi 3B+ boards. So not a hardware problems. 4 different SD cards too.

                          @mitu sorry, forgot to include my monitor info. 1080p tv but not forcing CEA16, settings are on defaulted core config.

                            @mikeylikesit33 So far, except the resolution, you've provided very little info to track this problem down and try to find a solution. Saying I have the latest is no substitute for an actual version number (as noted in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first).

                              @mitu didn’t ask you to track it down. i responded to another poster that the bug is there.

                              But, if you want to know version... look at the latest the script pulls for compile. I’m not home, away for holidays, to check. I compiled it again yesterday though. So whatever is there.

                                This is a support forum, that's what it does.
                                You replied to this topic, which is about another problem - screensaver slideshow. If you don't have the particular details about versions at the moment, it's ok to say that. And if you want bugs to be fixed, then report them and we can see if we can reproduce/fix it.

                                  @mitu sorry to say this, because you seem helpful in your posts... but you need to read for context.

                                  I literally replied that the white screen of death happens in slideshow when you have 20 or more collections, and if the original poster switched to carbon theme, the problem would go away.

                                  Quit trying to be agitated, you seem like a good guy.

                                    I have less than 20 systems installed. My VRAM was set to 80 MB. I tried using the default carbon theme but I still get the white screen when trying to use the slideshow screensaver.

                                          Apart from this error, the other errors seem benign. Did you get the error log file after the screensaver started (and showed a blank image) ?
