@thelostsoul You definitely should build a cabinet. I even impressed a pretty girl with mine lately. Surprised the heck out of me. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜‰

This question is relevant to my interests. I don't play very much and definitely nothing new, I hate free to play and get motion sickness from 3D fps games. I came up with this whole retrogame console (that turned in to a bartop arcade) so that I would have something to keep me from thinking about work. It included everything from lengthy planning to woodwork to tinkering with computers. I'm about 8 months in working on this on and off, and nowhere near ready. There's something weirdly satisfying about all of this. Getting emulators to work, altering the appearance of the frontend, managing game lists and so on wins over actually playing the games, at least for now. Mostly I just test games, play for a bit but then get back to tinkering.

@Clyde Games and a pretty girl at a time - who wants more? :-D

@m2306 Yes. Maybe itโ€™s a bit like with owning old cars: Driving them is one thing. Spending unforgettable times in the garage (good and bad ones) is maybe closer to our daily lifes and hence, the more sustainable kick...

@Clyde That IS surprising. Not even my male friends have been very impressed with my project. Not to mention the waifu who just said "that thing is so going to the summer house", when she saw the cab.

@m2306 There are ladies who are into this but they are rare.
My friend, when I told her about Retropie she immediately asked if I have Galaga. She always played it with her friends when she was still a teenager.
And my wife likes Prince of Persia and Tetris. The latter we even play together every now and then. She just doesnโ€™t like that it gets faster and faster over time :-D

Ah, and we have this gambling hall in our small town where people from all across the area show up. Sometimes my impressionen is that there are as many girls as boys, but one has to keep in mind itโ€™s the new generation, with boys and girls between 18 and 24 years old for the most part ;-)

Very well done and good to know. Then I build two. xD If you impress a girl with such a cabinet, then she is the right person for you.

@m2306 @TimZett I have to admit that I know of a good number of women who like to play computer or video games. And most of them don't fit the cliche of unattractive she-nerds at all.

This time, it was more of a "her, too?!" moment, since I only knew her for two weeks and the topic of gaming never came up between us before (don't want to scare them away at the first couple of dates, won't we.)

@TimZett I know a similar share of women from a gaming-themed bar called interFace here in Berlin, Germany. And I agree that in the younger generation there may be more gaming-oriented women than ever before, but even among those in their 30s and 40s today, you can find them more often than you'd think.

In my case, I definitely think she is. ๐Ÿ˜Š But enough of the ramblings of a love-stricken fool, on with the gaming talk!

I think there is definitely something to be said for the joy of just tinkering with something. I have definitely spent more time getting everything working right and with all the games I want. And when I finally get to a place where everything is working smoothly, instead of sitting and playing the games I start to look for more things to tinker with. Don't get me wrong I play the games too but to be honest I mainly play ones I can play for a few minutes and put down. I just don't have the same amount of time to devote to rpgs and such anymore.

@quicksilver Same here, that's one thing I like in arcade games. They are meant to be played for a short time, whereas many console and computer games tend to demand more of your time. I mostly play 10-20 minutes after I come home from work, when I have to leave soon, or when I wait for guests to arrive.

when I finally get to a place where everything is working smoothly, instead of sitting and playing the games I start to look for more things to tinker with.

...especially when your flash memory (SD card or USB) shows first signs of dying :-)
In my case, fortunately everything still worked including file system access, so I was able to backup things on file level.

If you do, let me know and we could have a drink, maybe in the interFace bar. (Only if you want to, of course. No problem if you don't. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

I have 3 pi setups. A bartop arcade, a modded atari that hdmiโ€™s out to a flatscreen tv and a pi built into a CRT. I can finally say after messing with Retropie for 5 years now, Iโ€™m finally at a place where all my setups are basically complete except for the occasional adding or deleting of a romhack or 2.

I play a lot now, and would you guess I use my CRT setup the most? Itโ€™s just the most authentic and the least lag. CRTs are the best.

@Capeman I havenโ€™t even seen an actual CRT in a very long time. I just tried one of the Retroarch default CRT shaders for the first time and it looks great and with no apparent lag on Famicom emulation. It definietly adds to the feeling so I see what you mean, it would probably be even cooler on real CRT. Thuogh for me a real CRT is out of the question due to size and weight.

@m2306 Lag really doesn't have to be an issue, but it can be with the wrong hdtv. On mine I can't notice any input lag. Maybe I would be able to notice it if I could play the game side by side, crt tv vs hdtv, but it's all good for me the way I've got it set up right now.
