This thing of retrogaming is getting out of hand...

Selling some roms will not get you in prison.
The likelihood really depends on where you're charged, but intellectual property theft can indeed be a jail-able offense. It might not be especially fair, but sometimes a defendant's notoriety can play a part in the severity of sentencing in order to send a message to other offenders. Soulja Boy might be a small 'c' celebrity, but this story has already spread pretty far in the gaming community and many people are watching it closely, if for no other reason than amusement. A stiff sentence would definitely be remembered and talked about for some time.
-
The problem with a stiff sentence is that it could snowball into something that affects us all, especially in the emulation scene.
I worry that, Nintendo (for example), could be emboldened to pursue areas we all know it hates - Roms and Emulation, which is only a civil offense. Imagine if it was made a criminal offense ? Power and money, do talk the loudest. -

Anything's possible. However, outside of setting a strong example here and there, I doubt they'd want to perpetually remain in court with what ultimately amounts to their user-base. The damage to public relations alone over time would likely be a deterrent. Now, if you're talking about taking action against larger operations that profit heavily off of their IPs, such as ROM sites, I'm sure that will continue to happen.

Maybe Sony will come to our aid if that happens, since they used an already existing emulator in their PSX Mini. :)

Ok, so "boss up" means "stop selling illegal console".
-
ROFL test out where souljagame.com leads to now. Hint, it was the name of the handheld Soulja Boy sold.
Edit: This year was crazy, where big companies failed and we got this Soulja Boy issue. -
A bloke selling someone else's property for their own profit, doesn't seem entirely unreasonable that one could get into trouble for it.

Here is a review by etaprime on the SouljaGame handheld V2--Save your money !! LOL !
-
That looks awful. And the lag, even in the menus, is just nuts. What a waste of $100, let alone the $30-£40 you can get it from import.
-
@John_RM_70 Spend 40-50$ in a RS-97 device and you are happy with it. These devices are so easy to modify ;)
The best retrogaming experience is a Raspberry ;) -

RS-97
I have 2 PSPs, 2 Vitas, and a Waveshare Gamehat with a Pi3B+, so no need for that RS-97 thing.

This is a great amount of devices.

@ByteThis Is he still selling consoles bundled with illegal roms?
-
@saccublenda He is selling this version 2 with no mention of roms in the sales listings, but from that video he is loading roms on it once again. I think he is going to be in HOT water this time with the big "N".
This article is dated from Jan.12 : https://techraptor.net/content/soulja-boy-clones-make-a-return-with-the-souljagame-handheld -
@ByteThis Will he boss up again?
-
@saccublenda Sure..when he is in jail..hahaha ! He can revisit his old rap songs with his fellow inmates..maybe have a sing-a-long.
-
Being in jail or having been there may actually help his carreer in the Rap music scene.
-
@Clyde I don’t know, going in jail for selling illegal videogames to nerds will make you look tough like 50 Cent?
-
@saccublenda More like 5 cent

This is a real shame. Hacking is healthy for the game community. It shows developers what can be done with their own technology. It was like when the original xbox came out and people were running kodi on it (xbmc back then), microsoft were like "wow, that's really cool, maybe we should build a media centre", and they did. But the trouble with that is that it becomes a victim of it's own success, and without big names behind it kodi is in trouble, just as emulation is in trouble.
