Can't connect to Pie 3 B via SMB or FTP (Mac)

Hello everyone,

I have just purchased and set up a Pi 3 B running RetroPie and it seems to be going well with many ROMS working great. I transferred ROMS from USB which worked well. I followed guides closely in the set up which I did from a Mac quite seemlessly.

But I can not connect to the Pi using either SMB share (preferred) or FTP. I can see RetroPie in the "shared" options in Finder but when I attempt to connect (U: pi, P: raspberry) it times out with the message "There was a problem connecting to the server "retropie""

I have successfully connected the Pi to my wifi as I have installed some updates to it.

Hoping somebody has experienced and resolved this issue as I dearly would like the Pi to access Roms from my Airport server.

One other factor is that my IP address is 10.0.0.33 which seems strange as I was expecting "192.168.1.1" or similar. Could this be why I can not access via FTP?

@samboy5000 its common for some routers to have 10.0.0.1 as their ip as apposed to 192.168.1.1 whose router or router/modem are you using?

SMB stopped working with the Mac around 3.7 as first mentioned here. I can't speak as to why FTP wouldn't be working, but I would personally recommend SFTP/SSH over it anyway. What Mac file transfer program are you using?

@mediamogul Many thanks for this advice. I had seen articles about SMB not being supported but wasn't sure if it had been resolved. I use Cyberduck a bit but couldn't get it to connect to the Pi using SSH but now I know this is the preferred method I'll have another go.

@edmaul69 Ok it's good to know this isn't a problem - I haven't seen any mention of this before. To be honest I'm not sure of the brand of router - Ill check when Im home and see if I can find more info. Thanks for the advice, Sam.

@mediamogul Hi again, I made some progress by resetting the pi's password from the default. This allowed me to make an SSH connection via Terminal and all looked good. I tried the same credentials in both Cyberduck and Finder and both are still timing out. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Ok update for everyone, I made a last ditch attempt by using FileZilla and it worked straight away. Not too sure why Finder and Cyberduck couldn't work but all good now. Thanks.
