When I am on the overworld map the screen turns solid red when I try to enter a town/forest or just after wondering around for a while. The emulator does not freeze because i can still access the retroarch menu and load a save state.

I am using lr-pcsx-rearmed at 240p (happens on hdmi as well) on pi3b with retropie v4.4 (clean install, had problem on previous install as well). I have tried multiple roms, different versions (2.0, undubed, original) and even ripped a clean one from my physical copy and tried pbp and cue/bin. I have changed the video driver, toggle all advanced features on/off. I am running no shaders, cheats or enhancements. I have also tried different Bios files.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Your config files are really huge and you should have posted on pastebin.com, the only thing that pops is the runahead frames (1).
Do you have a save file from before this happens so we might test to see if it's an emulator bug or a configuration gone awry ?

                @mitu
sorry about the huge logs. (edit: put them in pastebin, I would delete the old posts but I am not allowed)

                save file:
                https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wMyT2tzoduHZ6G8PuEIDMmMsILHliRdg/view?usp=sharing

if you go to the town or back to the forest the screen immediately turns red. I had this problem on my previous retropie install as well and gave up on it back then. I was hoping it would be resolved with the new install.

I do not have runahead enabled. In the retroarch menu it will not let me set it to "0", just in case I have tried setting it to "0" manually in the config but it has made no difference.

                thank you for the help

Ok, so I tried your save state and - unfortunately - I experience the same problem. Screen goes goes red, but the music is still playing. I tried differenct BIOS files and changing to a lower resolution, but the result is the same.
I'm going to give it one more try by using the latest version from source, but I don't think it's going to solve the issue.

updating lr-pcsx-rearmed was one of the first things i tried, it made no difference.

Thanks for trying, at least now I know it is not just my setup.

@shiro321 Thanks for providing the save files. I checked both your files. When I load the save state and back out of the menu the screen turns red.
But when I load the srm file, I can't reproduce your issue. I fought multiple battles on the world map succesfully, went inside Dazil (nice music :) ), talked to some townies and returned to the world map and fought some more. No red screen whatsoever.

Played for some longer, entered Dazil, the desert and blackmoon forest all multiple times..without any problems.

@mitu Have you tried his srm file as well? If you have his issue too, it might be caused by some update, as I run an older image:
                      Retroarch 1.6.7
                      Retropie 4.3.5
                      PCSX ReArmed r22

@BobHarris I'll try this as well. I have an old version of the emulator and I think I have the game there. If it works for me I'm happy to share my version of the binary.

@BobHarris Thanks for taking a look. The PCSX-Rearmed version is at r22 for a pretty long time, so it's hard to say which core version you have vs. that's current. I didn't try the .srm file, but I've tried all the fiddles in the core options to see if anything that's set by default influences the way the game works.

@pjft I don't think that's necessarily. Today I installed Retropie 4.4 on a spare sd card to see if that makes a difference, but it doesn't. With all the stock settings, the save state fails but the in game save seems to work fine.

Tested the srm save on my end as well and can confirm it works so it is definitely something wrong with the save states causing an issue in the game. Sucks losing the option to use save states but at least I can play through the game again.

Thank you all for your help.

edit: still happening after I open the retroarch menu to toggle cheats or something, have some ideas I will test and post my findings later
