Hi, I am totally new to all this so please bear with me.

I have setup RetroPie and borrowed an Xbox 360 controller (its a wireless controller but is attached to a wire that make it plug into USB, i think the wire is used to charge it maybe). But when RetroPie boots up, and asks to press different buttons on controller, it does not detects buttons when I press. Its like the controller is not attached at all.

    What should I do.

For the Xbox 360, you need an receiver (see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Xbox-360-Controller/). The cable you have is only for charging and it's not for data, hence why it's not detected.

@mitu Thanks for saving me from needlessly trying different things.

@darth_wader I should note that the wireless adapters can be picked up for around $10-15 on Amazon and they work perfectly and easily allow connecting up to four controllers. I have used 3-4 different brands of them and have never had an issue.
