      Hello,

I've set up RetroPie on a Pi 3 Model B+, and would like to record some gameplay.

I like the sound of the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2, as it can operate PC-free.

Before I buy it, I was wondering whether anyone here has experience using this card in conjunction with RetroPie, and whether there are any pitfalls to be aware of when setting up and recording?

Ideally, it would work fine, as the card is just capturing the HDMI signal. However, I've heard of capture cards causing display issues with emulation machines.

I believe RetroPie has an in-built record function, but I'd prefer to leave the Pi to take care of the emulation, and hand the recording off to a separate unit.

      Any help appreciated.

      Cheers.

@RetrOkada I have an elgato capture card that works alright. Might be worth humouring the different methods of screen recording natively on the pi if it will save you $100 on the capture card. The uv4l browser method looked interesting

@herb_fargus Okay thanks for that. I’ll have a look at those methods as well and see what works for me. Admittedly, it would be nice not to have another device near my TV ... got some nightmarish cable management going on as it is😉.

You can record both the Rpi audio-out and HDMI-video in webm format from within the PC/Android browser (plugin-free) with UV4L (no need of any capture card). This is a demo showing hot to play a game in the browser:

You do not see a record button in the above page because it is used to only play the game, but there is another page available at a different url on the same uv4l web server with the record functionality.

You can even record from within android chrome:
