Updating emulationstation to-dev
-
@bhuthogg The OS you're using doesn't have the necessary dependencies to compile the Emulationstation newer versions - it might not even compile with your Raspbian version. Are you using 4.02 or 4.2 ?

Hi thanks for the quick reply, it's 4.02,
-
@bhuthogg Your RetroPie version may be too old to properly compile Emulationstation. What is the actual error you get when trying to update from source ?
-
@mitu I'll try to get a photo of it, I'll do it again now

I would just like to get grid view support if possible? If not I'll have to approach this differently maybe?Thanks again for all the help so far

@bhuthogg The images don't show the actual errors, just that an error has happened. More details should be in the log file (that's mentioned in the picture).
Instead of trying to install the-dev
version, which seems it's not going to work, I advise you to upgrade to an 4.4 image. The version included there can be upgraded safely to the newest Emulationstation version (2.8.3), supporting also the Grid View. -
@mitu sorry, I'll copy paste or photo the log file when I get home, I'm really trying to avoid 4.4 as it's at least 3 times (probably more) longer on boots and Rom loading, wouldn't there be an older version of -dev that would be compatible with 4.0.2 ? Again I'm very grateful for your help
-
I never recognized any longer loading times on boot-process or rom-loading and no difference to older versions of retropie (using und updating since 2.7)
-
@sirhenrythe5th oh wow on the Zero its a HUGE difference, i might make a little video.

@bhuthogg I think Emulationstation is installed, but the install script is made for the new version and expects an additional folder to be available. If you start ES now, it should show version 2.7.6 - which has support for custom collections, but not for Grid View.
oh wow on the Zero its a HUGE difference, i might make a little video.
I'd rather diagnose and fix this problem, instead of trying to debug why ES doesn't install. How many ROMs do you have ?
-
@mitu its only about 3000 roms on a 16gb sd 5/6 systems,
-
@bhuthogg This shouldn't be a problem for Emulationstation, especially if you turn on the metadata parsing option.
-
@mitu i think i will try 4.4 again with the exact roms/systems/sd card but last try it was at about 20 seconds for a game to be loaded
again.. thanks

@bhuthogg Just make sure you do an update after the initial install, including OS and packages. If you still encounter the issue of slowness, then please open a topic and provide the information asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

ive just gone over the boot config.txt and it would seem that i had forgotten i had overclocked the original 4.02 image, im very sorry to have wasted the time. but can you verify my (3 years ago) config is "safe" ?
arm_freq=1000 gpu_freq=500 core_freq=500 sdram_freq=500 sdram_schmoo=0x02000020 over_voltage=2 sdram_over_voltage=2

I'm not an expert in overvclocking, but if the same values have been working without issues, on the same PI, they should be ok with the new version.
