I am using a Raspberry Pi 3B running RetroPie 4.4 (though I have had the same issue on previous versions of RetroPie). I use the Rii Mini i8+ keyboard for when I have to work in the console (not often, but it happens). I keep seeing people rave about this keyboard and never mention any issues other than things like mapping the media keys or the F-keys not working. None of this matters to me...what does is that while it seems to MOSTLY work properly in the console SOME keys do not seem to be properly mapped. One perfect example that I need to use fairly often is ~ (tilde). It seems that no matter what key combo I press I can't get this symbol. I will get other characters or nothing at all depending on the modifier key is pressed with the key.

Am I the only one with this issue? Can anyone tell me how to correct it please?

      Thank you in advance.

Did you try to change the system language to en-US ? By default, Raspbian has an gb-UK keyboard mapping, where ~ is mapped differently.

THANK YOU! That was it and I feel like an idiot for not thinking of this.

@LyteWing Remember that ~ is just a shortcut for the user's home folder, you can easily replace it with the full path (/home/pi or $HOME).
