Some Taito related improvements i've added to the MAME2003-Plus core over the last month or so taken from later MAME builds.........

0.144: Angelo Salese added a preliminary ES5510 DSP DRAM input/output latches support in Taito F3 driver, fixes sound in Riding Fight.
7th November 2011: Angelo Salese - Implemented ES5510 DSP DRAM latches to Taito F3 driver, this adds full sound to Riding Fight.

0.144: Angelo Salese added a preliminary ES5510 DSP DRAM input/output latches support in Taito F3 driver, fixes sound in Ring Rage.
7th November 2011: Angelo Salese - Implemented ES5510 DSP DRAM latches to Taito F3 driver, this gives correct sound to Ring Rage without going into test mode first.

0.102u5: Nicola Salmoria fixed butterfly wings do not work properly, when you get the 'Freeze Time' bonus.

0.89u1: More Taito F2 blending improvements [Bryan McPhail]. Added the TC0360PRI blending modes to the games with rotation layers. This includes Pulirula & Liquid Kids. One of the blending modes is new to these games (not used in Gun Frontier) and I have no way to verify it's actually correct - someone with a working board will need to verify (Liquid Kids: Fish going in water,
        Pulirula: Crystals on level 2).

0.88u6: Support for extra effects in Taito F2 driver [Bryan McPhail]. Transparent sun in 1st level of Metal Black. Special effect on Metal Black level 5 boss who slides in under the bottom tilemap. All known effects in Gun Frontier (see the attract mode). The update also provides full 5 tilemap layer priority support in Metal Black (was previously 4 due to pdrawgfx limitation), and fixes priority problems in Ninja Kids.

Is this following statement from initial posting still true?

As of May, 2018 a complete MAME 0.78 romset collection and a complete MAME 0.139 romset collection together

In the documentation page to MAME it says MAME 0.78-MAME 0.188 are the required sets. I suppose the initial posting in this thread is no longer valid? Will there be any state of the emulator where the romset requirement will not change, like the other MAME emulators?

I plan to use it when I start a new image on Pi 4 and right now I am a little bit confused.

Well the whole point of MAME2003-Plus was to backport extra game support as well as fixes and improvements that were possible
working with the MAME78 codebase, so it is a core that is in a state of constant flux, although the majority of the work has now been
completed and 98% of the roms have not changed in quite some time.

Dunno what you mean about other MAME emulators the roms for those change every version more or less ;)

As a rule we tended to leave the roms at MAME78 unless a fix or improvement necessitated a small change, but once that change was made
we dont update the roms further, also when supporting a new game we take it from the MAME version where it first became playable
and again we never update it, the reason MAME188 is now mentioned is due to @arnoldsecret adding support for more games
of late one of them being Jump Kun.

I mean a fixed romset requirement, that is not changing over time, like mame2003 requires MAME 0.78 set, which does not change. I don't mind adding support for more games. ;-)

@thelosoul I think you wanting something that not possible since any game can be added/fixed. Here is some advice find a set online or build from mame current with rollback. That will build you any mame set so would be more sound advice

I understand where your coming from, some people prefer their romsets to remain static, whereas others dont mind them changing if there is a benefit to be had
obviously this means a slight inconvienience in having to trackdown a new romset, at the end of the day your free to choose no one is forcing you to use MAME2003-plus
if you want your roms to remain fixed then MAME2003 is your core.

BTW we dont wake up of a day and think right we'll just update the romsets for something to do there's usually a method behind the madness................

                            Toaplan Sound

Fire Shark and Vimana had their sound MCU's dumped by adding these to the MAME2003-Plus core we now have full sound and music in those
games whereas before they had none and were silent, obviously the new MCU dump has to be added to romsets for those games which in turn
means you need a new rom, so we weighed it up a small rom change vs no sound in the games so we chose the former as we thought the benefits
                            far outweighted the negatives.

0.181: Decapped, deprotected, dumped and hooked up the HD647180X MCUs for Fire Shark and Vimana[CAPS0ff].

                            Bubble Bobble MCU

The emulation of Bubble Bobble was not correct until they dumped the protection MCU which provided game logic for the enemy movements
level timers, powerups and 1up letters to form the extend, by adding this MCU Bubble Bobble can be considered to be 100% emulated vs
guessed protection workarounds which meant the game didn't really work correctly, again a small rom change was required to support
                            the new MCU dump.

0.107u3: Trinity and Nicola Salmoria added support for real Bubble Bobble MCU. Added M6801 (1MHz) CPU4 and TAITO JPH1011P MCU rom (a78-01.17).

This is the point of MAME2003-Plus apart from adding new game support we also backport fixes and improvements from later MAME builds
i've gave you two examples above, your free to stick with MAME2003 and have no sound in Fire Shark or Vimana and Bubble Bobble will
not play correctly or you can take advantage of the above and many other improvements by using MAME2003-plus with the understanding
that you might have to update a rom or two in the process.

@arcadez2003 I appreciate the work you guys doing there. Don't misunderstand me, I was just asking, so I understand how to work with it, as I plan to use -plus in the future. I mostly would like to get rid of two different MAME versions that I currently use, mame2003 and 2010. Is it possible to suggest games which I use in mame2010, to be added in mame2003-plus? Is adding support for a game something like copying some source code or is there more to do, from the developers perspective of -plus (essentially you)?

Reading those bug fixes makes me uncomfortable to use older versions now. ;-) Didn't know Bubble Bobble, one of my all time classics, wasn't emulated "perfectly"!

@grant2258 I wouldn't say that its not possible. The way is done with regular MAME could be also done with the -plus line. In example there could be a mame2003-plus-2020 and the other regular one always in development. But admittedly, I question myself if that is needed with the -plus line, so the RetroPie maintainer and developer don't get more versions to work with.

Just to be clear, my question should not sound negative in any way or suggestive. I just asked, because of the contrary information found.

@thelostsoul - mame2003 is based on 0.78 and is static. That's probably its main advantage.

Mame2003-plus came into being later. It started with the mame2003 source and has been expanded by a few hundred games and updated around eighty. There has also been several sample updates and additions.

I think the difference is official MAME comes out every few months after significant additions and/or updates. Whereas mame2003-plus does not. They make minor tweaks and/or addition to get a single game working and other times they may code huge overhauls to drivers.

Even so it would be impractical to create a new static ROM set for every game addition or update to mame2003-plus. If they had decided to go that route then mame2003-plus would have about 200 builds/versions and 200 ROM sets with very minor changes between them. It's less than ideal and unmanageable long term.

To facilitate building a ROM set they have added on-the-fly DAT generation. Basically start any game go to your TAB menu and click "Generate DAT File" (or something close to that) and it creates a current DAT file to whatever build you're running.

The good is most of the feature changes and updates have been ported over to mame2003 by the devs. The main advantage of mame2003-plus is you'll occasionally receive a new game here or there or even small batches after driver updates. There are also a few features that are m3plus only.

The challenge is you'll need to update your ROM set to take advantage of them. A majority of the ROMs (90th plus percentile) are cross compatible and ready to go which is a big help if you have a mame2003 set already.

If you have current MAME and the rollback set you can build a complete mame2003-plus set, almost. Here's a small list of additions that aren't in official MAME or the rollback that you'll need to complete the set. I am behind a few versions so it could be slightly different now.

Not included here are a few games that have OST samples that are completely optional but really enhance game play. Basically the games will work without them but they really fun additions with them.

Depends on what games they are and when exactly they were added to MAME, the code changes with every MAME release and the further the build is ahead from MAME78
the more work is required to actually hook it into our older MAME2003 codebase, none of it just drops in it has to be altered and reworked firstly and not everything in current
                                  MAME is actually backportable either.

But feel free to throw out your list of games you'd like to see playable and i'll let ya know if it's possible.

had a wee shot of ring rage and metal black. Its probably because i played it was i was younger in the arcade but the exciting hour as i called it when i played it seems better than ring rage to me. Ill give it more of a chance at the weekend when im off work. No bother with the two games i tried so far though.

Winding down with this core nowadays but i'll still take on the odd fixup should the workload not be to great, as per a tip from @arnoldsecret it turns out a couple of
NeoGeo games were totally broken in MAME2003 while a third had some niggles here and there, the problem was some incorrect code to handle the graphical zooming

Hey arcadez2003, love the updates. I might have another suggestion for a NeoGeo game with minor issues: Top Hunter. The game plays fine, but the screen transition into a bonus section seems to run at single digit frame rate. Is it the emulation, or just the Pi that can't handle the effect? (there's a bonus stage very early on, in a tree in the background, if you'd like to see for yourself what I'm talking about)

This shouldn't happen in MAME2003 as this issue was fixed many builds previously.

0.37b13: Nicola Salmoria fixed NeoGeo raster effects in Top Hunter (waves when entering bonus stages).

Are you using libretro MAME2000.?? which is based off 0.37.b5 and is a few builds before the above fix.
