Super-basic Retropie Setup Script question

I'm currently still running Raspbian Jessie, as the thought of a complete ground-up install of a new OS version literally makes my blood run cold. Is it safe to update the Retropie setup script from the menu, or will that try to install Stretch or some such horror?

RetroPie-Setup will not upgrade your OS.

@SpudsMcToole I'm still running Jessie. Make a backup of your system/card first. I found that when I updated the setup script some of the emulators' names were altered eg fbneo, meaning that some emulators didn't work any longer after I had manually adjusted some of the customisations I had made.

It's easy to upgrade from Jessie to Stretch , but you have to start fresh from a Stretch Retropie image. I tried the internal upgrade and for me..it didn't work out so well. There is a lot of useful info in this site to safely backup files..folders..configs..roms and transfer all of that to a fresh Stetch image.

Read the entire thread and the upgrade is easy peasy..did it myself and you don't have any problems installing updates of emulators and any other updates that you find pertinent to your setup.
Just do a backup of your sd card first.

That's precisely the thing I want to avoid doing. I've tried backing up 120GB of ROMs, screenshots and configs from the Pi before, and it always ends in a trainwreck of conflicts and errors.

On the Big List Of Things I Don't Want To Do, typing stuff like this:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge && sudo apt-get -y autoclean...is really, really high up.
(I mean, I don't even know WHERE I'm supposed to type that. I manage my Pi through the WinSCP interface and no command typing is ever required.)

You have to use PuTTY to type the commands.
Launch PuTTY, enter the raspberry ip and connect.
User: pi
Password: raspberry
From there you connect to the raspberry in ssh and can type the commands.
It takes a little time to update jessie at strech.
