(RPI4) During gameplay, the display went black but I can still hear audio
-
Hello everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to read the problem I'm having. I know that the Raspberry Pi 4 is not officially supported, but that is what I'm using. I am using the fkms_rpi4 branch and that seems to be mostly working.
I'm playing a GBC game and after maybe 10 min or so the display goes dark but I can still hear audio. When this happens I am able to make a restore point to load the game from after I reboot. Is there a log that might explain what's happening?
I have the micro USB connected to the slot immediately next to the USB-C Power connector.
Pi Model or other hardware: Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core ARMv8 CPU (4GB RAM)
Power Supply used: CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply with Noise Filter
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest): fkms_rpi4 branch as of commit eb7efa3 (Oct 10, 10:36pm EDT)
Built From: Source (https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/tree/fkms_rpi4)
USB Devices connected: Logitech controller, bluetooth dongle for keyboard, another bluetooth dongle for a different keyboard (accidentally left that in, but I can't imagine it could cause this problem?)
Controller used: Logitech Gamepad F310
Error messages received: None. Display goes black.
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant):Parameters: Executing: /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch -L /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-gambatte/gambatte_libretro.so --config /opt/retropie/configs/gbc/retroarch.cfg "/path/to/rom.gbc" --apendconfig /dev/shm/retroarch.cfg
Guide used: Manual Install Wiki
File: N/A
Emulator: GBC lr-gambatte
Attachment of config files: https://pastebin.com/X9KnyREr
NOTE: I have changed a few values in there trying to troubleshoot this issue.
How to replicate the problem: Install raspbian buster from the 09/26 image (with desktop) and then install retropie fkms_rpi4 branch from source. I installed only the core components of retropie and then only the lr-gambatte emulator.Thank you for your time.
UPDATE
Here is a bit more information. When I first connected the RPI4, I set the following because the display wouldn't come up.hdmi_force_hotplug=1 hdmi_drive=2
Then during troubleshooting of the problem I added (per some random forum):
hdmi_group=CEA hdmi_mode=16
I tried removing
hdmi_drive
,hdmi_group
, andhdmi_mode
and only keepinghdmi_force_hotplug
and the issue was the same (but I could see and play for about 10-15 min or so before the screen went blank). -
I feel like an idiot... the display was just going to sleep...
If I pressed a key on the keyboard connected to it it would wake up again! Now to figure out how to prevent that!

@Xystus777 Normally this is done by
runcommand
when launching a game, by runningsetterm --blank poke
Are you not using
runcommand
to start your game ?
