I have searched but most questions seem to relate to multiple c9ntrollers being plugged in at once, whereas I am thinking about swapping controllers when I play a different system.

For example, I would like to boot rp and play a SNES game with an 8bitdo SNES pro usb controller. Then when I have finished a game, remove that controller and plug in a nes style usb controller for a nes game. Would this work if both have previously been set up as controllers or does rp only allow for one ‘player one’ controller to be allocated at a time?

It works if you only keep one plugged in at a time. You could leave them both plugged in and then re-order the controllers each time, but it would be better just to unplug the existing one and plug in the new one between system changes.

It should work, as long as the connect/disconnect part happens when you're in Emulationstation.

only one would be plugged in at a time, I was hoping to be able to go back to the main ES menu, replace the controller, and then choose a system and game with the new controller...

@chubsta That's exactly what @mitu said should happen, if I understood him correctly. Doesn't it on your system?

you shouldnt encounter any issues doing this i switch and swap between controllers all the time have several 8bitdo controllers and my ps3 and 360 controller and use whichever one im feeling like when picking a system to play on a side note retroarch based emulators for the most part will also allow you to swap out your controller on the fly if memory serves me correct though wireless controller may or may not get assigned to player 2 depending on how you dissconnect/recconect a controller had that before with my 360 controller

I was waiting for answers before I bought a new controller!
