retropie for the PI4 ????

we are now over 5 months since the release of the pi 4 with no suitable retropie software
This is incorrect. The github has the RPi4 branch which works quite well for many, many of the platforms. Simply install Raspbian on your RPi4 and install the retropie-setup script from that branch. Then install the emulators and other tools you want. There are some pretty decent howto's on how to do all of this on reddit for instance.
What you will get with that is basically what RetroPie will be when it's done for the RPi4 minus some system specific optimizations I'm guessing. But in my experience it works well. I've been playinf N64 games by doing this with very decent performance. Something I can't do on the RPi3B+. -

its a forum its whats it for. my previous comment still stands, we are now over 5 months since the release of the pi 4 with no suitable retropie software... just lazy
Yes, we know, a house was built in 3 days, the world was done in 6 (according to some sources), etc. You're repeating yourself.
never said I wasn't a dick.
Then be yourself elsewhere. This is not a public forum and you're insulting the people that created this place to begin with.

While we are on the subject of development progress, I have general questions regarding the individual applications used in Retropie.
Is each emulator supported by its own team or is the Retropie team involved in managing these to make sure they are Raspbian/RPi Hardware compatible?
Sort of the same question I guess, but to word it differently, there are variations of each emulator for different hardware and OSes, so are those typically some sort of fork developed by a different set of individuals or is the Retropie team directly involved in the Retropie specific ones?
-
Well apparently that guy sucked.
But seriously, thanks to all the developers using their free time to help bring us greater entertainment. I hope there is a Pi4 build soon but I know it will be released when it's ready. Keep up the great work you awesome developers!
-
@KN4THX Generally, RetroPie tries to make sure the emulators/applications/libraries included work well on the Pi - patches or bug reports are sent to the upstream project to ensure that.
They are a few ones that don't have any upstream anymore, they've been hosted on the RetroPie Github repository and maintained, but they're not actively developed anymore (Daphne, pisnes, zdoom, pifba).
There are also few applications directly handled directly by RetroPie - the most visible being Emulationstation (also not active upstream anymore).Since RetroPie is open source, you can check each package's origin on the Github repository - https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/tree/master/scriptmodules.

I love this forum, as soon as a "moderator" doesn't agree with something you say, he/she bans your account.... LOL what a joke of a forum. Great software terrible community but I guess you get what you pay for.

You were banned for language and trolling. If you have nothing constructive to say and you're here just to spite other forum members, I don't see the point ?
-
You sir, are a liar. I would never use foul language.
-
-
You are posting bad words, how have you not been banned? Its almost like you only ban people when you dont agree with them. A smart someone said that once.

You are posting bad words,
Apologies, I corrected myself.
-
i would even ban you as a regular user if icould!
Of course it is done by moderators or administrators, but you annoy the whole community - not just the people with the rights to click certain buttons. -
It's a sad truth that many people who behave badly to others can't take the headwind they get for it with dignity themselves.
I'm sorry for the offtopic post, so I take the opportunity to thank the moderators to keep this forum a pleasant place 99.9โฆ% of the time. ๐

@mitu Thank you. I was curious what the workload was of a hobby this magnitude. It is mind-blowing that you all have to support so many applications on some level of Retropie.
-
The current situation (manual installation required for the Pi 4) almost works like a filter against lazy blokes. I kinda like it!
I think it's time for this topic to be deleted...
-
@matchaman Maybe closed, but I wouldn't want it to be deleted, since it documents how some people behave against voluntary developers, and that many long-time users don't agree with any of that. ๐

It's easier than you think
You can install Raspbian Lite and RetroPie manually on the Pi 4. It works great for RetroArch cores but not that well for stand-alone emulators.
More info here: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Manual-Installation
Note that it's not officially supported, use at your own risk and feel free to experiment.
Once everything becomes functional and the whole build is considered stable, there will be an official release.
It's not entirely up to RetroPie developers, it's more of a global set of things that need to become compatible with (and take advantage of) the new hardware.
[semi of topic] Retropie not supported if you install via the (official?) script? I believe you, but I do not read that on the site you refer to. I might be mistaken, but I thought that the script was no different than the SD card image. I like the "manual" install way better because that way you have regular Rasbian too on your Pi which makes problem solving on the Pi way easier. Especially if you're used to using Linux, like me.

Funnily, It's the other around with me. I'm a Linux user since 2006 and I like to control Retropie remotely only by ssh โ either via shell commands or with graphical tools using the fish protocol. Even with ssh encryption, fish is much faster than Samba for file access.
A desktop environment on my Pi would be unnecessary system load for me. But everyone's preferences are "right" for them in this matter, and one big strength of Linux is it's versatility from text consoles to 3D desktop effects (which I love my KDE Plasma desktop for). ๐
That said, I did install Retropie manually on my desktop PC and my Laptop running Kubuntu and KDE Neon, respectively.

if you install retropie via the instructions in the link to install to a pi4, you won't install the WIP raspberry pi 4 branch, you'll install the regular master branch and it won't work. the WIP pi 4 branch is the one you want, so yeah it's not "official" in so far as it hasn't been merged to the master branch yet.

[off topic] Aha, that's why. I too do most Retropie troubleshooting via SSH. And I (almost) never run a GUI on my Pi (it's a 1B+, ha ha). What I meant is something different. Sometimes you do not have a second computer around to troubleshoot the Pi. I love my Pi so much that I take it with me to my (young) nephews to watch movies (I use an SD card w/ Kodi then). And sometimes I play classic games w/ my nephews. I'm (almost) 50, they are between 9 and 15. They love 'Combat' on the Atari! And 'Ms. Pac Man' and 'Donkey Kong' never get old.
Anyway, to troubleshoot Bluetooth connections etc. I like to escape to the command line by pressing F4 in Emulationstation. In cases of a real emergency I can even start a GUI (desktop environment) and surf the web for solutions.
As of writing this I don't know if the SD image of Retropie also escapes to "regular" Raspbian after pressing F4. It might though...
[on topic] Never realized that the Pi4 requires so much programming to get Retropie to work on it! Didn't realize that the graphical hardware is so different. Keep up the good work. I think that some people don't realize that Retropie is a "hobby" project by people in their free time, as opposed to free OS-es like Ubuntu. Ubuntu is made by a large paid team of professionals if I'm not mistaken. It's also free which might be the reason why people expect so much of Retropie. Retropie looks too good and professional to be made by hobbyists, now doesn't it? ;)
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
