retropie for the PI4 ????

@mitu Thank you. I was curious what the workload was of a hobby this magnitude. It is mind-blowing that you all have to support so many applications on some level of Retropie.

The current situation (manual installation required for the Pi 4) almost works like a filter against lazy blokes. I kinda like it!

@matchaman Maybe closed, but I wouldn't want it to be deleted, since it documents how some people behave against voluntary developers, and that many long-time users don't agree with any of that. 👍

It's easier than you think
You can install Raspbian Lite and RetroPie manually on the Pi 4. It works great for RetroArch cores but not that well for stand-alone emulators.

Note that it's not officially supported, use at your own risk and feel free to experiment.
Once everything becomes functional and the whole build is considered stable, there will be an official release.
It's not entirely up to RetroPie developers, it's more of a global set of things that need to become compatible with (and take advantage of) the new hardware.
[semi of topic] Retropie not supported if you install via the (official?) script? I believe you, but I do not read that on the site you refer to. I might be mistaken, but I thought that the script was no different than the SD card image. I like the "manual" install way better because that way you have regular Rasbian too on your Pi which makes problem solving on the Pi way easier. Especially if you're used to using Linux, like me.

Funnily, It's the other around with me. I'm a Linux user since 2006 and I like to control Retropie remotely only by ssh – either via shell commands or with graphical tools using the fish protocol. Even with ssh encryption, fish is much faster than Samba for file access.
A desktop environment on my Pi would be unnecessary system load for me. But everyone's preferences are "right" for them in this matter, and one big strength of Linux is it's versatility from text consoles to 3D desktop effects (which I love my KDE Plasma desktop for). 😎
That said, I did install Retropie manually on my desktop PC and my Laptop running Kubuntu and KDE Neon, respectively.

if you install retropie via the instructions in the link to install to a pi4, you won't install the WIP raspberry pi 4 branch, you'll install the regular master branch and it won't work. the WIP pi 4 branch is the one you want, so yeah it's not "official" in so far as it hasn't been merged to the master branch yet.

[off topic] Aha, that's why. I too do most Retropie troubleshooting via SSH. And I (almost) never run a GUI on my Pi (it's a 1B+, ha ha). What I meant is something different. Sometimes you do not have a second computer around to troubleshoot the Pi. I love my Pi so much that I take it with me to my (young) nephews to watch movies (I use an SD card w/ Kodi then). And sometimes I play classic games w/ my nephews. I'm (almost) 50, they are between 9 and 15. They love 'Combat' on the Atari! And 'Ms. Pac Man' and 'Donkey Kong' never get old.
Anyway, to troubleshoot Bluetooth connections etc. I like to escape to the command line by pressing F4 in Emulationstation. In cases of a real emergency I can even start a GUI (desktop environment) and surf the web for solutions.
As of writing this I don't know if the SD image of Retropie also escapes to "regular" Raspbian after pressing F4. It might though...
[on topic] Never realized that the Pi4 requires so much programming to get Retropie to work on it! Didn't realize that the graphical hardware is so different. Keep up the good work. I think that some people don't realize that Retropie is a "hobby" project by people in their free time, as opposed to free OS-es like Ubuntu. Ubuntu is made by a large paid team of professionals if I'm not mistaken. It's also free which might be the reason why people expect so much of Retropie. Retropie looks too good and professional to be made by hobbyists, now doesn't it? ;)

It's the same - there's no difference - it's the same Emulationstation version included in both. The image it's created from a stock Raspbian Lite installation image.

As someone with nearly zero Linux understanding I'd much rather wait for the "official" release. I've heard and seen working versions on some Pi4s but I'm pretty sure I'd never get it working.Until then I can still thank the developers for outstanding work. How else can one play Guardian Legend on an NES emulator on a 55 inch 4K TV with an Xbox One Elite controller and save state my way through the game to save hours of frustration?
Patience will allow one to play Dragon Force on a Saturn emulator with the Xbox One Elite controller, as well.

@ultrakev9 But you're forgetting that Retropie is an open source project taken on by volunteers providing software for non-commercial use for the sole purpose of making money on Etsy and Amazon.
