      @mitu I am using the retropie image suggested in the initial setup documents. That makes sense what you say, so how do I correct this?

        But if you didn't save this config file, then how it's automatically saved ? It has config_save_on_exit = "true" in there, so if it hasn't been enabled, maybe there's another mechanism that you activated which switches this on, potentially breaking again the configuration.

          @mitu yes, I remember that now. I was following a video tutorial online which was unsuccessful. What do I need to do now to make this work? Re-install retropie??

            @mitu or can I just delete my config file and install the correct one?

              @mitu or can I change the line to config_save_on_exit = "false"??

                You should replace the megadrive system's retroarch.cfg with the default one provided by RetroPie and re-try to see if your main input mapping is applied. The file contents should be:

                # Settings made here will only override settings in the global retroarch.cfg if placed above the #include line

                input_remapping_directory = "/opt/retropie/configs/megadrive/"

                #include "/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg"

                  @mitu I will have to wait until I get a new memory card unless this config can be downloaded or a possible pastebin link?

                    @mitu I have managed to get the correct config file in there which is now correct. Thank you so much.

                      @mitu just to make sure this time, when I want to change the button layout I use the input section in the RGUI and save the config remap?

                        If you want to modify the layout just for a system and/or game, then yes, use a core/game remap, as I explained at the beginning of the topic.

                          @mitu thanks mitu. Im confused yet again. I have gone into each separate system this morning and changed the button layout using the controls option then pressing save core overridesin the RGUI section. Yet again, they are not saving. Should I be using the input option in the RGUI menu and creating binds for each system??

                            Don't you get the 'Remap saved successfully` message when you save your core remap ? How do you determine they're not saving ?

                              @mitu for example

                              I am going to change the button layout for Alien Storm for the Sega Megadrive

                              I have started the game
                              Entered the RGUI menu
                              Go to controls
                              Set the buttons up accordingly
                              I click on save core remap file in the controls menu
                              I have the message "remap file saved successfully"
                              I resume the game
                              The buttons work perfectly
                              I exit the game back to the game selection menu
                              Restart the ROM
                              And it works perfectly.

                              I don't believe this. It has worked. The problem was I was saving using the "save core override" option when I should have been using the "save core remap file" in the controls screen.

                              Thank you so much for everything Mitu. No doubt I will encounter another problem where you can rescue me again. Thank you and have a nice day my friend.
