Wee bit of help saving The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX on GPi CASE

Hey there, I'm new to Retropie and I'm running it on a new GPi CASE. I'm trying to save and load game in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX for the Gameboy Color emulator. I have tried pressing Y+X+B+A and using the Retroarch interface to save to a slot but this doesn't appear to work. Looking at this post I attempted also Start+Select but this also doesn't appear to work.

So, I'd welcome guidance on how to save and and load the game! Thanks :)

Press everything. AB, Start, Select.

It's how I save in-game and it works fine, no RetroArch interface, save states, or anything else needed.

@BlandCorporation the above is exactly right, don't forget if you have hotkey set as select the pi will respond to that as well. So for links awakening I change the controls so select and start are X and y on my controller. Saves a lot of hassle.

Hey gang, thanks for all the kind suggestions there! All suggestions resulted in a working solution. :)

I suspect what was happening was that I firstly wasn't saving correctly within the game. A+B+X+Y+Start+Select is the in-game solution for that. But when doing that, one risks quitting the game by using the default-ish Start+Select hotkey combination without saving. Also, after saving within the game, it appears that one should use a clean hotkey exit from the emulation or the save doesn't actually get saved (I wonder if this could be done a bit better internally?). Anyway, the solution was to avoid conflicts with the hotkey combination, so my approach was to set the hotkey to Shoulder Left. So, the save procedure which works now is:

A+B+X+Y+Start+Select (Save within the game.)
Shoulder Left+Select (Exit from the emulation cleanly, apparently enabling the save to work.)

Do you have triggers? If so, set hotkey to one of them, as there are (one?) console(s) which use them. PS1/PSP (maybe). They are the least used buttons.
