Need help setting up sf30 pro bluetooth with 8 bit do adapter for my retro pie. Used PS3 controller, then USB wireless keyboard first.

Okay, So I am probably lame. I hate it when I get stuck on something like this and have probably done things that have been counterproductive. I am new to all of this and have been struggling with the wireless aspect. I have a 8bitdo adapter (ASIN: B07B7LMM52 , Item Model # NT70-XX-2-1). And I have a SF30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad. I can't get my system to recognize my controller.
I have a Raspberry Pie 3B+ with retro pie. I originally connected a PS3 controller, but could only get it working by connecting with a cord. But the 8bitdo adapter still sees the PS3 controller I think. I also used a USB wireless keyboard to move some files around. But I feel like these things are taking precedence over my new controller. How do I get the system to identify my new controller.
Under RetroPie Setup Script the version is 4.5.11 (running on Rasbian GNU/Linux 9.9 (stretch))
I just want to be able to use my wireless controller.
A secondary problem is that my external hard drive I am using is old and corrupt. So, sometimes the systems don't launch correctly. I think that is why that is happening. I have a large SD card installed. Can I run the ROMs directly from the SD card on my Pie, instead of the usb external hard drive?
Thank you to anyone for help. I am just slightly good enough at this stuff that I can back myself into the worst corners and hate asking for help.

After pairing the USB adapter and the controller, try using
Start + B
to power up the controller, then check again in EmulationStation if the controller is detected.A secondary problem is that my external hard drive I am using is old and corrupt. Yes, you can remove your disk and then follow the docs on how to transfer your ROMs.

If the controller is plugged in with a cord it will detect it, but it will not detect the 8bitdo adapter. I didn't install a heat sink on the internal Bluetooth chip because I had this adapter and planned to use it. I don't know why it can't be detected.
