Indiana Jones Temple of Doom - Cannot seem to get it to run.
-
My apologies if this seems like a small issue, but I'm new to working with Retropie. Getting there though.
I'm desperately attempting to get Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom to run on my Retropie system. I'm running a 3B+ model and most systems and games run fine. I've searched this topic here and a few other places but cannot seem to get it to work still. I've checked the compatibility list and it should run fine on lr-mame 2003. I've also noted that an Atari System 1 bios should be installed as well. I have downloaded that and placed it in the BIOS folder both zipped and unzipped. Even copied to the 2003 subfolder as an attempt. I've had no luck, though I did get a boot error message stating it was missing ROMS "136032.205", "136032.206" and "136032.107".
These files exist in the Atari BIOS zip, but in slightly different names. The same across multiple downloads I have found. These names are: "136032.205.l13", "136032.206.l12" and "136032.107.b2" respectively.
The ROM I'm trying to run is indytemp.zip. Just the first version, not trying to run sets 2-4 without the parent or anything, nor is it the roms for the pinball machine. Tried multiple versions of this file as well.
Also I have updated lr-mame 2003 via source through the setup.
So is this a problem of placement? Of incorrect naming? Any help would be appreciated, because...well...it's INDIANA JONES man! Would love to have that one.
Having trouble getting Galaga to run too, but lesser of an issue.

That BIOS appeared in MAME version 127u3, so it's not part of the MAME2003 ROM collection.
Just like with Galaga, you'll need the correct ROMset for your emulator - as explained in Arcade quick start. The game runs without any additional BIOS files with the correct ROMset:

So does that mean I need to install a different mame version to the Raspberry Pi? The compatibility chart led me to believe it was 2003.
Teasing me with the pic haha. Great game!

No, you need to have a proper ROMset for Mame2003, as mentioned in the documentation page I was referencing before.

Well the versions out there that I can find are all the indytemp.zip files that are referenced in the 2003 compatibility list. I guess that's what's confusing me. How can I know it's the correct rom version?
Not to mention other forums in other places stating bios is needed etc, though those may be older.

You don't, if you just download an individual ROM set (.zip), there's no reference in it to what MAME version is compatible.

As I said, the BIOS is not part of the MAME version you're trying to use. MAME 2003 is base on MAME
0.870.78 version, so at that time that BIOS didn't exist. The advice applies to later (or current) MAME versions, where this BIOS exist.Take a minute to read the Arcade doc page that I mentioned and the links from it. As it says:
Arcade emulation requires a different approach than console emulation
EDIT: corrected MAME 2003 version, thanks @quicksilver.

Apologies if it seems I hadn't. I'd tried to read and understand all those pages before coming here.

I think you mean 0.78 version

So I did manage to locate an indytemp.zip version with the noted missing files included in the .zip with the rest of the Indy roms. Is this, for instance, a version that the bios isn't needed because necessary files are there, and therefore likely a better chance at being the rom set for the emulator? An emulator that doesn't require or have a bios?
I can't test now as I'm at work, and I know you can't verify that this rom set will work in my case, but I'm asking more in the general sense in an effort to understand the difference in mame versions. IE The indytemp file I had before wasn't for the emulator I was choosing, as it was intended for one where a bios file was needed, but this one might be as the missing files appear in this .zip.

Yet, you still download individual
.zip
files hoping they would work. There's no guarantee that the file will/would work, so please take the advice given in the docs - download a ROMset collection for your MAME emulator and get the zip from there, instead of trying to hunt down individual files that may or may not work. -
@jbuente you need to look for a "mame2003 0.78 full romset". Search for that exactly and get the full romset. If you want to pick out individual games to load onto your pi after that, that is fine. But you need to follow @mitu advice, you can't just randomly pull individual ROMs off the web hoping they will work.

I was not aware there were full collections somewhere. I will search.

Aha! I see.

@jbuente I got this game to run from a non-merged mame 0.78 rom pack, indytemp.zip, 352kb. I think you may be using a rom from a merged rom pack, as the errors seem to indicate mame is looking for parent/children roms. Before I eventually found it from the non-merged pack, I was using the German version. It works perfectly, other than the spelling is in German.
