Why don't you re-configure your controller again in EmulationStation ?

Just tried that, but still hotkey alone exits a game, no way to get to RGUI...

What did you choose as Hotkey ?

@mitu 'select' again. Should I have chosen another? It doesn't seem to matter if I do. The 'new' hotkey doesn't work, and 'select' still exits a game on its own. It's like Emulationstation has its own button setup next to Retroarch, hotkey-wise.

@WeirdH What happens if you just skip the hotkey and you choose 'Use select' when the input configuration menu asks ? Did you disable the auto-configuration for RetroArch from EmulationStation ?

                Nothing, same behaviour.

I don't know how to do that, so probably not?

Going into /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch and launching the standalone Retroarch to change the hotkey also didn't take.

It's one of the options of the EmulationStation package.

Why would it work like this ?

Can you post your retroarch.cfg - use pastebin.com. Can you also check in the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads and see if your gamepad configuration file is updated recently ?

I don't know, I figured Retroarch is Retroarch, no matter where you start it from. I'm not very knowledgable about all this.

This is the one from configs/all. Is that the right one? I have already tried renaming it to fake its absence, but nothing changed.

It is. About ten minutes ago, when I reconfigured in Emulationstation.

Okay, fixed it... I checked the retroarch.cfg located in /opt/retropie/configs/arcade and that was the one with the wrong setting.

both 'hotkey' and 'exit' were set to "9", so I changed it back.

                        No.

I see that the path to the auto-configuration is ok, should point to your joypad auto-configuration folder. I see that the hotkey is marked as

                        input_enable_hotkey_btn = "9"

You can check what button corresponds to 9 by looking in the gamepad .cfg file from the said auto-configuration folder. You can just paste the .cfg file's contents here to take a look.

@mitu Thanks for all your help and effort. I fixed it by checking a bunch of retroarch.cfg's. The one in 'configs/arcade' was at fault.

Makes sense, as I only use the arcade folder on my cab.
