    Pi Model or other hardware: Pi 3 B+ rev 1.3
    Power Supply used: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1995
    RetroPie Version Used: 4.5.9
    Built From: Manually installed Raspbian then RetroPi as described in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/
    USB Devices connected: USB keyboard
    Controller used: Pimoroni
    Error messages received: ?
    Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant):
    Emulator: EmulationStation

    I built a Pimoroni Picade with my son. After some adventures, we got it work and have been having fun. But a friend came over, monkeyed around with some controls, and now the START button doesn't work once I have launched a game (for example, Dig Dug).

    I have of course tried to configure this in EmulationStation--many times. FWIW I have usually set the Hotkey to be SELECT. Not that it seems to make any difference. Once I have launched a game, I cannot start it (but can add as many quarters as I like!).

    I ran evtest from the command line and can see that all my buttons are indeed connected to the system. My START button appears to be configured as KEY_0 (code 24)

    Any suggestions much appreciated

      On what system are you experiencing this ? It may be your friend remapped the buttons, so check the \\retropie\configs\<SYSTEM> for any .remap files.

        Hmm. When I launch the game (Dig Dug) it briefly states lr-mame2003. Is that what you mean by "system"?

        I checked the configs dir. On my system it is located at /opt/retropie/configs. I don't see anything specifically for lr-mame2003. I don't see any .remap files around here.

          The folder where the ROM is located - arcade, mame-libretro, nes, snes, etc.

              Check the \\retropie\configs\arcade folder - what files are in that folder ?

                @mitu I don't know how to copy that here... but I see roughly:
                content_history.lpl
                emujlators.cfg
                retroarch.cfg
                retroarch-core-options.cfg

                  Strange, that shouldn't be there. Can you post the retroarch.cfg file's contents on pastebin.com ?

                    sorry, I'm too dense to figure out posting to pastebin.
                    retroarch.cfg contents looks like this:

                    input_remappong_directory = "/opt/retropie/configs/arcade"
                    #include "/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg"

                      @lydgate That should be ok, I was thinking your friend used the 'Save Configuration' menu option in RetroArch and overwrote the config.

                      Try to delete the MAME input config file (default.cfg) from the arcade/mame2003/cfg/ folder and see if this solves the problem.

                        It worked! Unbelievable. That is absolutely amazing. Thank you, @mitu !
