      Hi all,
I’m setting up my rpi4 with new RetroPie distro. I’m having an issue: MetalSlug 6 and KoF Neowave for Atomiswave runs after I copy roms into the uSD but they don’t work anymore after sometime. I noticed that lr-flycast creates two files having same rom name but with .nvram and .nvram2 extension. If I delete these two files and try to launch that games they work fine. Do you have any idea? I’m thinking about the possibility to delete these created files at boot or shut down: do you think there is a way to do that?

      My system:
      Raspi 4 2GB
      uSD Arcanite 256GB
Power Supply from RS Components 5V 3A
      DS4 controller

@pscotto1234 Hey man. Did you ever figure out a solution to this other than having to manually delete those files each and every time you want to play either game?

Running into the exact same issue.

          @fetussandwich

I figured it out a while ago

Run the Atomiswave games once and let it generate the nvmem and nvmem2 files ... play the game for a bit, then exit it.

After that, disable Write Permissions and the game will work fine the next time you launch it ... without needing to delete the nvmem and nvmem2 files ever again.

With Write Permissions enabled .. the 2nd time you launch the game, it just hangs at the Notice ~ All Backup Data Was Cleared screen.

I used WinSCP to disable the Write Permissions for my entire Atomiswave rom folder.

          Eg. Pic 1

Eg, Pic 2 ... double check everthing is r-xr-xr-x

Yep, try it for yourself if you're skeptical ;)

I got tired of deleting the nvmem/nvmem2 files and then one day i thought, i wonder what would happen if i change the Permissions ?

I figured there was no harm in trying ... Any lo and behold it worked ! :)

@dreamcastkid That's a smart idea. I also read somewhere right after posting this to try and find the MAME roms for both games.

Low and behold, I cleaned out all of the nvmem files, replaced the roms, and both work flawlessly.

Was trying to figure out how to get the blood patch working for Metal Slug, but gave up and took my moral victory above with me.

Just wondering, is this related to the VMU format/initialize mentioned here:
                  https://docs.libretro.com/library/flycast/#compatibility

It's the second bullet point under Compatibility.
I'm not familiar with Dreamcast stuff so I could be way off.

There's another way to fix metal slug 6 freezing at the start in retropie which worked for me but it involves using retroarch on pc. Open retroarch on your pc then just boot mslug6 using flycast then it will generate the mslug6 nvram and nvram2 which can then be located in retroarch/saves. Now all you need to do is replace the ones in retropie using the ones generated by retroarch.

@genos98 could you enable red blood? (like changing mslug6.flash\sram for demul)

@iga Never really thought about it. But the atomiswave metal slug 6 with blood mode is already available if you know where to look.

@genos98 sorry... I know only method with file substitution in nvram for demul.
For riecatst nvems i can't find those files.

Or maybe could try to open service menu by pressing combination on second controller + some on first, but I personally have never been able to do this

I dont have a PC, so is it possible to change the permission on the Pi itself?
Something like go to the terminal and use a command like "sudo chmod-a -rw /home/pi/roms/dreamcast/mslug6/nvram.nv"?

@iga i will try to activate blood as soon as i can restart my metal slug 6 again.
I found two ways that i want to try:
Either activate the service-menu by a weird button combination, or change the parameters of the nvram with a hex-editor as shown in another forum

But first i must care about the file permission ;)
@all: would the command "sudo chmod ugo-rwx [foldername]" work?

@sirhenrythe5th I've tried wired combinations with 2 gamepads, but don't get success.
Also tried took right mslug6.flash and mslug6.sram from demul and renamed it as nvram.nv for rreicast. but don't get success too....

@iga i allready confirmed that the demul-files are not compatible to lr-flycast.
Give me some days, i am pretty sure that editing the nvram with a hex-editor will work.
I will upload the modified file and give you a link to download.

@sirhenrythe5th Any progress with this (HEX editor)?
I am facing the same exact issue with these two roms and I tried with the files generated with flycast on a PC and the result is the same (i.e. still freezing at start)...
