          really?

you can't use retroarch if you can't load the cores.

Why? Is that a real question?

I want to play games on the raspberry pi using retro pi.

I have a collection of mame roms.

in order to play them, i have to load an emulator core.

it won't do it, it says "failed to retrieve core list" in the core updater.

I appreciate any help but I didn't expect to be asked what and why on a forum about the very thing i'm trying to do.

          can you help?

This is not a RetroArch forum - it's a RetroPie forum. RetroPie already installs and configures the necessary libretro cores - you just need to copy your ROM to the proper folders and restart EmulationStation. See https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/ and https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/.

If you wish to install more libretro cores - they're available from the RetroPie Setup script - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#updatinginstalling-individual-packages.
