Which Raspberry pi should I get?

Hi I posted my first thread yesterday and got loads of great advice so I was just wondering which pi should I get for the emulators?
I was going to get the pi 4 as it’s the latest one but now I’m unsure. For a beginner what would you recommend and why please?

The Pi 4 model is the most powerful Pi model, the Pi 3b+ is the most tested/compatible. Depending on what games you intend to play, you can choose between these 2 models.

Hi Thank you for your reply, I want as many games as possible over all the consoles etc, I realise the 3b+ has been tested more but would I be better in the long run with a 4? I would like everyone’s opinion on what they would do/choose, you guys are the experts so I appreciate any input/advice

@NurseAngela If you want as many games as possible over all the consoles then I'd go with a Pi 4. Especially n64 games run a lot better and many more are now actually playable. A Pi 3 will struggle with these a lot. And even in the long run I think the Pi 4 is just a better machine, because it's simply more powerful. Haven't tested much nDS games but I think the Pi 4 is better suited for that as well, along with Dreamcast emulation, but others might now better about that than me. You still won't get things like GameCube or ps2 games to run on the Pi 4, but again, it's still a better machine than the Pi 3 and will allow you to run more games because of that.
Personally I'm very happy with my upgrade from a Pi 3 to a 4 because of the things I mentioned. So I'd totally spend a few bucks more to get the better machine, imho it's worth it. Be aware that you probably gonna need a few extra things for a Pi 4, like a micro hdmi cable (or an adapter for a regular hdmi cable), a usb-c power supply and a case with a fan for cooling.
Of course these are just my opinions and experiences, others might say something else.

@NurseAngela it also depends on how you feel with programming.
the software for the Pi4 is in beta so you might come across something that you need to do some work to get working.
not to worry the great people here will always be willing to help if they canthe Pi3b+ software has been tweaked to the point where it will work with out a problem once you install it and get your games over.
i think you will be happy with either one as long as you know what you want to play and what to expect.

@ExarKunIv thank you for your reply I’m ok to do things as long as I get a step by step! I’m not very technically minded. I just don’t know what to get. I want it for the classic games like Mario, street fighter, tmnt, Simpson’s, double dragon, outrun etc.

@NurseAngela if you would like something that will work more or less out of the box. with the less chance of hiccups, then i would say the pi3b+. it will run everything under the PSX with out a problem and with almost no bugs.
like the others have said the pi4 is more powerful so n64 and dreamcast work better, but the software is still being worked on. so it has more of a change for bugs
either way. both are really good. and you will not be disappointed with either.

I had to make a choice so I bought the pi4 do you think it will be easy to set up with retropie? Really nervous that I should have got the 3

@NurseAngela the setup is the same for both
and since you said that you where more for the older systems you will be fine.
and now you have the power to mess with the some more demanding systems once you get used to working with it.i know thats how it was for me.

Brilliant thank you. I could only afford the 2gb version will that be suitable?

i have asked plenty silly questions, and a few i answered my self.but everyone here is great are always willing to try and help out.
you have to start somewhere.
i never mess with Linux before this. and im still clue less with about 90% of it, lol -
@Wolf64 How has your experience been with N64/Dreamcast games been in general? I see a lot of differing opinions on here about it.
I went through and built my emulators on my pi3 a few years ago. It was awesome, but I could only get a few N64 games to work properly.
A lot has changed since then for me... namely adding another kid in household to the mix so I don't have quite as much time to tinker. Like for example, I tried every which way to get two DualShock controllers to work via BT but could never get them going simultaneously.
Is there a recommended seller that sells these things 'fully baked' these days?
