Running Retropie on top of existing Raspbian install-performance concerns

So I'm running Retropie on top of existing Raspbian install And I noticed when I run it it does not kill the desktop environment like Kodi for example does. I wonder if my Retropie performance suffers becouse of this. Is the performance worse when compared to clean Retropie image? I tried to make a script that would kill Xorg and then run emulationstation but it did not work. When the script ran it killed the whole Xorg in the first step and then it could not run emulationstation becouse the terminal that executed the script no longer existed. Any thoughts about this? Should I be concerned with performace? Im running it on overclocked raspberry pi 4 4gb.

That's because you're running it wrong - the manual installation guide makes it clear you should install on-top of Raspbian Lite and not over the desktop version
The RetroPie SD image is built on top of Raspbian lite (Raspbian without the PIXEL desktop environment) RetroPie can also be installed on top of the full Raspbian but you can't run Retropie and PIXEL at the same time, you will need to logout of the PIXEL desktop environment in order to run emulationstation and the emulators RetroPie installs.

Yes I know I run it in a kinda backwards way. I know I could just get Pixel desktop from Retropie script, but it does not come with all the packages standard Raspbian comes with so I figured I'll just slap Retropie on top of my existing install. It works very well on top of my Pixel. I was just wondering if there is a way to add Emulationstation to my display manager so I could choose either pixel or emulationstation on boot.

Not quite, you'll have to choose between one of the two - desktop or EmulationStation.

@mitu And what if I created a script that uses ttyecho to kill xorg then start emulationstation and then once again start my desktop if I exit emulationstation? Am I onto something?

@norbit911 Why do it backwards ? You can start the Desktop from EmulationStation, so leave EmulationStation running by default. If you wish to run the desktop also when exiting EmulationStation, modify the
autostart.shfile and run the desktop startup command after theemulationstationline.
