-
Pi Model - Pi 4 4gb
Power Supply used - Canakit
RetroPie Version Used - Buster 4.6.1
Built From - Weekly dev build 4.5.13 updated to 4.6.1
USB Devices connected - Keyboard dongle
Controller used - 8bitdo SF30 proAfter updating I'm now getting this message. "lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!" The sound still works but I'm unable to change the volume in emulationstation's sound settings. It's at 0%, reverts back to 0% if I attempt to change it yet the volume sounds like it's actually at 100%
Here's my config.txt https://pastebin.com/ZMrXbc9N
Here's my retroarch.cfg https://pastebin.com/7AqXp4g3Thank you for the help.

@Quackwalks Same issue here. See you beat me to it ;P
Pi Model - Pi 4 2gb
Power Supply used - official
RetroPie Version Used - Buster 4.6.1After updating to latest stable firmware (sudo apt update/upgrade) im getting the same message as you. And as you said all emulators volume seems like its at maximum level now too.

This is caused by the recent change in kernel/firmware for the audio system on the Pi - the names of the cards and devices have changed (see the announcement on the 29th, the Other changes section).
The volume can be set using
alsamixer
or the Audio menu in RetroPie (which usesalsamixer
), but for EmulationStation the only workaround right now is to edites_settings.cfg
and setAudioDevice
toHDMI
, if using the HDMI for audioHeadphone
, if using the analog jack for audio.

@mitu Thank you this worked like a charm!

@mitu I've just installed a fresh copy of RetroPie today on my Pi2, and all is fully updated, games and sound are working (though the quality is absolutely terrible, you can barely hear the sound through all the noise).
I'm not using HDMI for audio, so I want to tell it to use the headphone socket exclusively, and I'm getting this error – but there is no
es_settings.cfg
file anywhere on my system. Why would that be? -

Did you follow the configuration instruction in the 1st post to configure the Headphone jack in EmulationStation ? You don't need to modify the settings file directly, you can use the menu to set it up.

@mitu I am having trouble figuring this out. is there a step by step out there?

@DKarn Yes, there's the 1st pinned post at the top of the Help & Support category - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/26628/.
