HELP!? Games wont launch after failed update

So first time raspberry pi owner here. Bought a pi and a separate sd card with games using emulationstation/retropie. The picture wasnt right so started with trying to adjust the resolution in options, then I tried in the actual pre game load screens to adjust the resolution. After one time in being able to access the preload game screen to adjust the resolution, I was unable to do it again.
Restarted the pi countless times...no luck. Then I read online maybe I should try to run an update in the options menu..did that...it ran all night (to say the update failed - now it states something about unable to fetch a "ref" when I try to update) and now my games wont launch (just has a black screen that says this and that "failed") - but retropie/emulation does launch. Obv I dont know what I am doing lol Any help would be appreciated on what to do. Thank you! -
@kennyp55 We don't support pre-loaded systems or 3rd party images. Start with the image from retropie.org.uk/download and follow the instructions to install it - it's all in the Docs.
