Saving high scores in Mame 2003 in prebuilt image

I have a prebuilt image which was downloaded from arcade punks running on my raspberry pi 4b 4gb. In Mame 2003 at least upon restarting retropie the high scores don't seem to be saving. Can someone tell me how you can modify the prebuilt image so that high scores in Mame and other emulators save after restart.
