Retropie missing 4 raspberry logo at boot

Strange,
I have tried a few installs on the Pi4 and it allways was fresh_image (4.6)->Berries shown, Updated Image (without OS Updates)->Berries still there, Update with OS Packages->No Berries anymore.
Now I tried it on my Rasbperry 3B (no Plus), which had an Image that I haven't updated since over a year (or two?, haven't checked). There the Berries are still shown after the Update.

@Ashpool Older versions of Raspbian do not receive firmware / kernel updates.

@BuZz Ok, as the Update took around 45min-1h, I haven't considered that to be a possibility - thanks for clarification & I will try with a fresh 4.6 on a 3B+ now.

Edit: Ok, confirmed - it also happens on the Pi3.

The boot berries display don't affect the performance. Why do you want to restore them - they don't have any functional impact ?

Seriously. Also it puts something on the screen during boot that isn't just a black screen. That is an instant indication whether the pi is booting. I can always buse the rainbow screen but honestly its obnoxious and when making a pi console looks unprofessional. :-T

I'm about to give someone a retro console as a gift and would like something to front end the boot visually as just a black screen for 5 seconds can be disconcerting if you aren't used to it.

@idelacio My guess they don't appear because of the (new) bootloader screen, which also features a raspberry:

Try to disable this screen (see here) and maybe the boot berries will be shown again.

@mitu Aw nuts, I was hoping that would work on the Pi4s, I suspect that screen is only forced for SSD booting as I don't remember ever getting it while booting from SD Card? Ah whatever, would prefer the clean raspberries but for my own devices I'm not that fussed.

Anyway doesn't make a difference.

For the Pi3's though this wouldn't apply. I considered overwriting the boot files with older versions but wary as this would probably just fail? :-T

That said mucking about with a test build, not all that fussed if I break that. Could I safely roll them back and how far could I go?

It's not only for SSD boot, I think the latest EEPROM have added the bootloader diagnostic screen for any type of boot.

For the Pi3, the bootloader is still in the firmware files in /boot. Usually the firmware version is paired with a certain kernel release and with the userspace libraries, so downgrading should include more than the firmware files - I think there are about 5 extra packages that are installed in tandem (libraspberrypi-bin, raspberrypi-kernel, raspberrypi-bootloader, libraspberrypi-dev, raspberrypi-kernel-headers). TBH, I don't think it's worth downgrading just for the lack of the boot berries.

@mitu Yeah, probably not sadly. You are probably right on the EEPROM, thinking about it I ONLY upgraded to boot from SSD and have never booted from any of the updated Pi4s with an SD.

Well least it's another pin in the knowledge base. :D
