Connecting PDP Afterglow Wii U Pro Controller: no bluetooth?

I'm trying to connect a PDP Afterglow Wii U Pro Controller to my RPi 3B+ with Buster 10.7 and retropie 4.7.2. Note: a WiiMote and 8bitdo work fine.
I'm a bit puzzled by this. The controller - see https://support.pdp.com/hc/en-us/sections/204086437-Wii-U-Afterglow-Pro-Controller - is wirelessly connected, and powered with 2 AA batteries; hasn't even a USB port for either charging or connecting. It works fine with a Wii U. But I cannot seem to get any Bluetooth signal out of it - not on my RPi, nor a Linux laptop, nor a Windows machine. I even tried a (Windows) bluetooth scanner application.
Is it possible for a Wii U controller (at least the PDP 'clone' I own) to not conform to the BT standard - and still connect to a Wii U? Both Wii and Switch do conform to bluetooth (to the best of my knowledge) and I read on https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Wii-U-Pro-Controller/ that 'proper' Wii U controllers can be connected.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

@cayce I don't know about your clone but I have an official Wii U controller and it is definitely Bluetooth. It is an odd version of Bluetooth though like the Wiimote. I have no experience of making it work on my Pi4 but on a Windows PC they require some fiddling/extra drivers. I've been using a Wii U Pro controller for CEMU on my PC.
I understand that they can be used as a wiimote (wiimote and nunchuck?) and I would like to look into using it as such when 64bit Retropie/Dolphin comes around. That will be some time off though.
