Portable arcade project for my younger brother.
-
Hey I wanted to share my progress with my portable arcade I'm making for my brothers 21st. Let me know what you guys think.
-
Super nice :o personally I'd add a door hinge on the controller+power door just so it doesn't fall off but it's slick af OuO
-
I really like the suitcase and exposed metal look, a bit of steampunk never hurt anyone (as long as you stay away from the gratuitous gears).
But the cutting, well... What's your deadline? If you have the time to do it, I would consider giving the panels another try. It would make you proud to look at, whenever you see it, rather than an eyesore that is going to drive you mad.
Keep it up!

@LSolrac2 Thank you my brother really liked it. I did fix some things since I posted those photos. Ill try to upload a more recent photo. The screen has a frame around it and looks really nice and I cleaned up the door a bit. I didn't have many tools to use so I did the best with what I had. Also, not much of a carpenter. lol
-
@Zigurana Thank you. Yeah I was going for a vintage look. I was really inspired by Love Hulten and his R Kaid R project he made. I did fix up some of the horrible cuts. Ill try to post recent photos later if I have time. I'am working on a new one that is pokemon themed. Going to experiment with wire inlaying. Ill post pics when I get started on that.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a suitable suitcase/briefcase for this kind of project?
Thanks -
@Brigane I used an old clarinet case I got at the thrift store for this one. They are perfect for this project.
-
@thedudester80 I'm curious, what screen size you used for this project?
-
@Brigane I used this screen I got from adafruit if that helps =]
-
@thedudester80 do I need anything else besides the screen to connect it to the Pi?
Thanks -
@Brigane You will need this decoder to make it work. Adafruit has a tutorial on how to program the screen to work. You will also need an HDMI cable to connect the decoder to the pi.
-
@thedudester80 thank you!l
-
@Brigane no problem, good luck with your future projects.
-
@thedudester80 thanks, Where did you find that detectable joystick?
-
@Brigane Amazon. You can get all kinds of arcade parts there.
-
@thedudester80 I know, it's just that this one seems a bit different from the others around amazon.
I though about using one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aluminum-Holder-Flight-Briefcase-Backing/dp/B00MEDMD38/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1473851478&sr=8-3&keywords=aluminium+tool+holder+box+case
It might be to small though.
What do you think? -
@Brigane I would compare dimensions of the arcade buttons and the case that you plan on using. Those arcade buttons are a bit lengthy sometimes. For my project I had to bend the prongs outward so everything fit inside correctly. If the buttons are to long you wont be able to fit the Pi and other components inside. Basically the shorter the buttons the better. The Joystick is also a pain. It would get stuck on the surface of the case and didn't have smooth movement. So to fix that I cut a small pocket just deep enough for the joystick to move freely. As for your case when you take out the padding cover the inside with electrical tape so you short anything out. I did that when I made my Altoid tin game device.... But yeah I think the case would be great it just depends on how deep those arcade buttons sit. =] Also if you are curious about what I did with some of the wood work I made this for fun just to kind of document what I was trying to do with this project.
-
@thedudester80 Nice video, I will definitely use your advising in my project. When making the holes for the buttons I thought about printing one of these http://slagcoin.com/joystick/layout/incline36_s.png but you did it quite well without it :)
-
@Brigane Yeah I wish I had a 3d printer, let alone tools to do a proper job on the wood work lol. If you have any more questions or need anything else you know where to find me. Good luck friend.
-
@thedudester80 Thanks, I really appreciate it, and sorry about all the questions. Are there any specific reason why you didn't used the GPIO on the Pi to connect the buttons?
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
